Buss from Riga to Tallin

by Marenmaren

I am coming to Riga in September, and I'm planning to take a buss to Tallin.
Should I book the buss ticket in advance? Or is it okay to get it when I come to Riga? Is it cheaper to book on line or while in Riga?

Maren:)

I would think it would be OK to book at the central bus station in Riga. It might be wise to try to buy the ticket an hour or 2 ahead of departure time to make sure. I booked always at the bus station in Riga and never had a problem getting a seat.

No problem there, plenty of buses between Riga and Tallinn. Eurolines and Hansabuss are the best and indeed most comfortable choice, the cheapest, Ecolines, are OK, too.

If you want some exotic, though, you can also take train to Valga. There are three daily departures, check Latvian Railways page for the schedules. The ticket costs under 6 €.Due to track works there's no rail traffic between Valga and Tartu and therefore no express service between Riga and Tallinn. You can take short bus ride to Tartu and then catch express train to Tallinn.

Travel Tips for Riga

Old Town (Vecriga)

by HORSCHECK

Take a walk through the protected Old Town (Vecriga) between the Dome Cathedral in the north and the St. Peters Church in the south.
In the pedestrianised narrow streets many restored 17th century houses can be found. The Old Town of Riga is divided by the street Kalku iela into two halfs.

Some Soviet relicts left

by Raimix

Not much soviet relicts left in Riga till this time. Even pavement from Soviet Union times is removed and new put in the central part of the city. But some things left and it is because ( I guess) that Latvia was a part of Soviet Union and you cant change it, it is a part of history. Near the Daugava river you can see old sculture from Soviet Era.

Daytrips to Jurmala and Sigulda

by Raimix

When I was second time in Riga (April 2006), I decided to make day - halfdays trips into Sigulda and Jurmala.

Sigulda is about 50 km from Riga and it takes a bit more than 1 hour to get there by train from Riga Train station. It is nice small town surrounded by Gaujas National Park and few medieval castles.

Jurmala is Latvian seaside, about 30 km from Riga, can be reached by train too. Very nice athmospere walking the streets full of wooden houses, bars, restaurants, relaxing walk along Baltic sea.

More information about these travel destinations is in my Sigulda and Jurmala VT pages.

Street stalls in Old Town

by niamey00 about Amber, etc.

There are many street vendors in Old Town selling amber, knitted goods, matryushkas, and old Soviet medals and such. You can find to vendors on Kalku iela, off Livu Square, and around St. Peters Church Amber, knitted items such as hats, mittens, and socks, and linen items Haven't purchased any off the street, but expect to pay less than in the shops

Getting there and around

by annase

You can get around the old town centre by foot. If you want to go outside the city centre, you can catch a bus, tram or taxis (they depart in front of the railway station) More info about the timetables, fares at www.rigassatiksme.lv.

Riga is a major transportation hub and is the centre of the local road and railway system. Most visitors travel to Riga by air via Riga International Airport, which was renovated and modernized in 2001. Baltic Sea ferries connect Riga to Stockholm, Kiel and Lübeck.
