There are some dodgy parts. This site has very good coverage:

I've visited Riga on business last year.
I can't comment/suggest on accommodation, but I can assure you that Riga is a remarkably lovely and a very safe place.
It could be more a bit more expensive than you'd expect though...

I have been to Riga several times and find the only thing dangerous is spending more than you planned on. It is safe as long as you stay away from some of the bars which advertise action. If you are not a Bar hopper, it is a nice place to visit, and you can walk most everywhere.

Try Doma Hostel . The hostel has an excellent location right in the centre of the old town. The hostel is about 10-15 mins walk from the bus/train stations.

Re: Accomodation in Riga

As I live in Riga I recommend you to chose this inexpencive hostel:

http://www.youthhostel.lv/en/prices.html

Riga is a small town. Prices in Old Riga are very much European.

The benefits of its hostel: its a little bit far from old town, but in quite cozy and inexpensive place. A lot of inexpencive small cafe and restaurants are within walking distanse (200-300 m), including Central railway station.

You can take a bus 22 from airport - stop is opposit to exit.
Price per any bus trip: 0,70 LVL = ~1 EUR.
From airport: chose the 2nd stop after you cross a river (its near by big-big cinema). Than go by walk forward - about 300-350 miters.
Print location of hostel from google map.

Or you can go by taxi, airport->hostel costs ~ 7-8 LVL.

Be aware that you can pay in LVL, not in other currencies.
Most of shops/hostels, but not museums and theatres, accept credit cards

Travel Tips for Riga

Art Nouveau in Riga

by gmg61

Plenty of Art Nouveau building stand in the old town: more than one third of the buildings in the city centre are Art Nouveau style.
During the Art Nouveau period, Riga was a uncommon city: a wealthy port town, a centre for transit trade, an industrial city (airplanes, trains, cars, and bicycles factories were at work there): the richness of that time is reflected in the beauty of the buildings.

You can take a walk through the Old Town and enjoy all this Art Nouveau beauties. In another section of my page (Things to do), I'll list the most beautiful buildings I've seen.

Vodka

by Woosey

I never had so much vodka in my life, as what I had in Riga in 4 days.
The barman of a place just around the corner was providing them almost every 15 minutes.
Not accepting was rude according to him. So instead of walking home, it was crawling home.

Football in Riga

by ValbyDK

Football is not the national sport in Latvia, but is becoming more popular. The best local side – at the moment – is Skonto Riga, and they are regular winners of both the Latvian league and the Latvian cup.

Skonto Riga play at the Skonto Stadium, and tickets are available at the ground the day before or on the morning of the match. The capacity of the stadium is about 9000 spectators.

I visited the stadium in June 2007 when Denmark played against Latvia in a qualification match for Euro 2008. Denmark won 2-0, so I have good memories of the stadium…

The gold of the Baltics: Amber

by maria_hz

Amber is relatively rare in many parts of the world, but not so along the Latvian shores. The first time I went to Latvia fifteen years ago, I couldn't believe the amount of amber and the prices. But that was all in the rough back then. The jewellery wasn't too developed, and there wasn't many styles to choose from. Now it's a different story! Now you can get all the basic stuff you could back then, as well as fashionable items.

Nice stores stock the more sophisticated stuff, whereas the street peddlers sell the more basic. The prices vary accordingly, but still generally amber is better priced than in many other countries. As long as you get a nice item for a decent price compared to Western European countries you are still getting a good deal.
