Art Nouveau in Riga
by gmg61
Plenty of Art Nouveau building stand in the old town: more than one third of the buildings in the city centre are Art Nouveau style.
During the Art Nouveau period, Riga was a uncommon city: a wealthy port town, a centre for transit trade, an industrial city (airplanes, trains, cars, and bicycles factories were at work there): the richness of that time is reflected in the beauty of the buildings.
You can take a walk through the Old Town and enjoy all this Art Nouveau beauties. In another section of my page (Things to do), I'll list the most beautiful buildings I've seen.
Vodka
by Woosey
I never had so much vodka in my life, as what I had in Riga in 4 days.
The barman of a place just around the corner was providing them almost every 15 minutes.
Not accepting was rude according to him. So instead of walking home, it was crawling home.
Football in Riga
by ValbyDK
Football is not the national sport in Latvia, but is becoming more popular. The best local side – at the moment – is Skonto Riga, and they are regular winners of both the Latvian league and the Latvian cup.
Skonto Riga play at the Skonto Stadium, and tickets are available at the ground the day before or on the morning of the match. The capacity of the stadium is about 9000 spectators.
I visited the stadium in June 2007 when Denmark played against Latvia in a qualification match for Euro 2008. Denmark won 2-0, so I have good memories of the stadium…
The gold of the Baltics: Amber
by maria_hz
Amber is relatively rare in many parts of the world, but not so along the Latvian shores. The first time I went to Latvia fifteen years ago, I couldn't believe the amount of amber and the prices. But that was all in the rough back then. The jewellery wasn't too developed, and there wasn't many styles to choose from. Now it's a different story! Now you can get all the basic stuff you could back then, as well as fashionable items.
Nice stores stock the more sophisticated stuff, whereas the street peddlers sell the more basic. The prices vary accordingly, but still generally amber is better priced than in many other countries. As long as you get a nice item for a decent price compared to Western European countries you are still getting a good deal.
