Renting a car for 12 days in Riga

by mgdon

Has anyone rented a car in Riga for touring? It dones not matter if the car is new. We want to rent a cheap reliable car with a/c. It would save us much time if we found out from someone who rented one in Riga and was satisfied. We will only be using the car in the three Baltic States.

Thank you in advance.

We did find this company with used cars and I think insurance is coverd as well. Have you heard of it?

Thank you again.

I've never rented a car in Latvia, but I know Europcar and Hertz have desks at the airport. http://www.europcar.com/car-rental-LATVIA-RIGA.html

haven't heard of that.

We got attracted by an advertisement of the company car4rent, which offered rentals @ EUR 28 per day for compactclass.
But then we read the contact was unlogical that could somehow be verbally explained, but some clauses could have potentially been very disadvantegeous for us in case of an accident would happen. And they couldn't show the insurance policy that we paid for. Cheap but very unprofessional.

Instead we went to Europcar , we got EUR 50 per day for 3 days VW Polo with 100% all risk insurance. Note that the starting price was higher, but some negotiation could be done. Excellent car/service. And they have an outlet at the airport which saved us a taxi ride.

Dragging the Yule log

by MalenaN

I was at the Ethnographic Open Air Museum during the celebrations of the Winter Solstice. An old Latvian tradition on this day is to drag around the Yule log, which represents all problems and bad things of the previous year. I followed the crowd around for the two hours the celebrations took place. The Yule log was two small log of woods dragged around in a long rope. People were holding on to the rope as we moved on. At several occasions we stopped and there songs, dances and other rituals were taking place. In the end we stopped near the entrance to the museum and there the Yule log was burned. We all got a small stick (our bad things) to throw in the fire. It was very interesting to see this tradition, which I didn’t know anything before coming here.
Coming back to Old Town in Riga I saw a procession dragging around the Yule log as well but it was a bit different.

Art Nouveau Treasures

by henrykkanada

Escaping WWII damage, the Art Nouveau district of Riga has many treasures. A walking tour in the area north of Old Town and the Freedom Monument, ie north of Elizabetes iela and between Antonijas and A Caka ielas, will lead to fine discoveries. The pictures are of the following:
1) University, Elizabetes iela
2) 1924 Kino Theater, Elizabetes iela, near Riga Hotel
3) State Museum of Art, Valdemara iela
4) apartment building, near corner of Elizabetes and Antonijas ielas.
Also 5) a building on Dom Square, in Old Town

Linen at the Ethnographic Museum

by niamey00

Several of the old buildings in the ethnographic museum have shops selling tradition crafts. Near the entrance, this shop sells linen and knitted wool items. The quality is good, and the prices are a bit lower than what you would pay in Old Town.

Airport Bus

by graeme83

From Riga airport there is a bus (number 22) every 20 minutes to the city centre. It takes about 15 minutes to reach the city centre and most impressively will only cost you 0.30lat. You pay this on board to one of the ticket ladies.
