Still the Best

This year - hotel Ridzene again.
The main hotel's advantage is its very quiet location in the very center of the city between two parks, Freedom monument and National theater. The American embassy that was wall-to-wall nearby, has moved.
Other reasons to choose Ridzene: Wi-Fi, high class restaurant Piramida that offers free and very good breakfast for hotel guests, inexpensive lunch: two-course is 7 Ls = $14, three-course is 9 Ls = $18 (however, a message for the chef: where is the fish soup I had last year? :-)
My Club Carlson membership allowed me to redeem points to pay almost half of the bill for my third (!) stay in the hotel.

Unique Quality: Location!

Hotel Ridzene

Radisson Blu Ridzene Hotel is a 5-star hotel with prices of 4-star hotels, if you book in advance.
The hotel was a place for Communist VIPs from Moscow to stay when Latvia was a part of the Soviet Union. The hotel was reconstructed in 2000.

The location is absolutely the best, surrounded by parks, city's canal and wall to wall with the USA Embassy.

Taxi service was always available, public transportation is within 3-minute reach.

In compare with Latvia hotel, that is in the same Radisson Blu group and is in about the same price brackets, hotel Ridzene is a much more quiet place to stay and is more "Latvian" by the ambiance.

Complimentary breakfast was very good, but I missed Latvian "Sald Skabju Maize" bread.

The hotel's restaurant Piramida, as I discovered too late, a day before leaving home, is better now than couple years ago. My personal favorites there are (Mediterranean?) Fish Soup and Crème Brulee.
If you want to eat on a budget, go to Double Coffee. The name does not reflect what it is, this is not a coffee shop, this is good diner. The only exception: avoid the nearest to the Ridzene hotel Double Coffee branch that is near McDonalds, if you do not have extra half an hour to wait. The nearest good Double Coffee branch is 5 minutes further, between Latvian University and Railroad Terminal.

Unique Quality: Location - quiet center, in the park.
Fitness center, gym, Nordic sauna, Turkish sauna, spa, parking, WiFi.

Very nice hotel

Only a ten minutes walk from the center. The room was nice, only the air condition could have worked more efficiently (it's off when you leave the room) as it was extraordinarily hot for Riga during our stay. Breakfast was excellent. The staff was friendly and spoke excellent English. When you book it on the Radisson site more than 4 weeks prior to your stay you get a very good rebate. So it was actually cheap to our opinion (well, maybe not for backpack travelers, but for middle-aged tourists).

A good hotel in a great location

The reval Ridzene was in a perfect location for us. It is situated between the old and new towns. It is a handy walking distance from everything we wanted to see - the independence monument, new town with its art noveau, old town with its beautiful old buildings, the bus station.

However, although it is very central it is far enough from the centre to be quiet at night.

Our room was clean and comfortable. Staff were pleasant and the bill was correct at the end of our stay.

We had a daily breakfast buffet with an extensive choice of food within the hotel restaurant which is shaped like a pyramid and made of glass.

Five star luxury in Riga

I would heartily recommend the Reval Ridzene Hotel. It caters mainly for the businessmen in Riga, although I found it as excellent choice for a hotel for pampering myself and my girlfriend. Having snaffled a great deal at www.activehotels.com I couldn't fault the hotel - central, quiet and well appointed. Being a businessman's hotel, it means that it tends to be pretty much empty at weekends - we found that we were practically alone when we had breakfast each morning and barely saw anyone in the hotel.

Unique Quality: Sauna, comfort, great breakfast. The hotel has been constructed to very high Scandanavian standards - the Reval group is Scandanavian and there has been no expense spared regarding the fittings and furnishings of the rooms.
