Riga mostly have German style of Gothic architecture and I found much churches, buildings that are made of gothic style. Influence of the occupation of Germans are very visible - some German writings that left on buildings, Protestantism religion form, Hansa city status and so on.
Latvian language is a bit similar to German, at least during my trips when I was talking Latvian, people was asking am i from Germany.
As in Latvia lives just a bit over 2,5 million people and only half of them are Latvians, our language can be considered as not very popular.
It is quiet complicated to learn it, because even you speak Latvian but are traveling
around Latvia, you can hear some dialects which might sound very different. And not
always u will understand what people are trying to tell you.
Some most needed words:
Hello - Labdien!
Thank you - Paldies
How are you? - Ka tev iet?
Good bye - Uz redzesanos!
My name is___ - Mani sauc____
I like very much to visit markets, and here in Riga there is a great market very well located, just in front of both train station and bus station.
Here you find some places (bars) where you can taste the local food.
Be careful in Riga's nightlife
Planning a trip to Riga? Cheap place, friendly people, no trouble. right? WRONG! Oh my god. Ive now travelled all over the world, and this place is the biggest rip off in the world. A 5 minute taxi ride = 8 Lats (8 pounds, 12 Euros), this was not just one taxi, this was every taxi. This is with or without the meter. Also, beer = 1.5-3 Lats, London prices my friends. Nightclub entrance, 5 Lats, what do the locals pay? 0.5 Lats. This is also the unfriendliest place i have EVER been to. I heard about the bad reputation this place had before i went, i just thought i could avoid several wallet lootings, but there was no reasoning with these unfriendly eastern european idiots. Why go to Eastern Europe, when your going to be paying Barcelona/Milan/London prices? And to top it off, random attacks for no reason on my english counterparts left us all feeling very very angry. Any help from the police? Bouncers? Absolutly no chance! This place will be a flash in the pan as for as tourism is concerned, and once this places bad reputation catches up, the rip off bars, taxis, restaurants, hotels and everyone else can go back to working in a factory for zero money. I strongly advise you to go elsewhere.
i really passonatly do feel i need to blow there trumpet after the spout of bad press.
Facts about ryan air.
1. yes, make sure you read the small print, this being your baggage allowence, if your going for a weekend or something and just taking 3 or 4 change of clothes, take a small rucksack, with the weight being under 10 kg, there is no charge!, we paid 4 pence return for 2, plus £40 taxes, how can you moan at that!.
2. you get into the aircraft, yes it is bland, no tv, suspicious stains on seats, but what do you want, for an extra £200 go and fly BA,
3. staff were more than helpfull, example, on our way home, one of the air stewards even offered to take us from the airport to the bus station in liverpool, would you ever get that from ba or brittania, i doubt it, my personal views of them is this, there a no nonsence carrier, taking you from point a to point b, nothing more, nothing less, hence there price, hence there the most punctual airline in europe (they dont tell you that on the news)
ryan air would be my number one choice to travel with again.
