airport transfers

by thekeys

A friend and me are having a mini break in Riga in mid June. What i would like to know is the best way to transfer from airport to my hotel(Hotel Vikorija) I usually pay for airport transfers tho the companys on the net , but it is coming up at silly prices(Up to £104 (A2b transfers). What public transfers are avaible . what i need to know is what bus number i need and where to get off. If any one knows a firm that offer transfers at a sensible price please let me know.(About £20 return) Also any ideas of places andstatements on the night life would be appriciated. Thanx in advance

I stayed at this hotel http://www.hotel-viktorija.lv/ on my first visit to Riga. I took the bus (number 22 ) for what was about 20p at the time. It's now about 50p. I had about a 10 min walk after getting off the bus which is fine if you don't have too much luggage & want to save money. A good tip is go to the tourist information desk at the Airport & buy ' Riga in your pocket ' for just over £1. They are the best travel guides money can buy in my opinion & you will be able to work out exactly where to get off the bus.

You could also contact the hotel and ask them to quote you for a taxi, and book it if it suits. It will almost certainly be less than airport transfer companies, which I have always considered vastly over-priced and have never used.

Ghosthunter is correct that # 22 bus will bring you to the Central Bus Station. However, you can also take the 22A Bus that actually gets you closer to the Hotel. OR, you can take the Air Baltic Shuttle that will drop you off On Elizabetes Street near the Regal Hotel. It costs 3 Lats. It runs about every 30 minutes. You buy ticket from the driver at the Airport In spite of people who have never been there suggesting a taxi that is very expensive. I have been there and done that !!!

Spelling misprint - Hotel is Reval. Look at http://www.rigalatvia.net/taxi/ and there is also bus schedules if you dig deep enough.

It is possible make airport transfer for 25 LVL=30 pounds

Re: airport transfers

I can find no-one on this thread who suggested taxis were expensive.

As the OP notes, specialist airport transfer companies (particularly, in my experience, those booked via the UK) often quote inflated prices. An 'ordinary' taxi (pre-booked or not) is usually cheaper such companies, as Edgarsla's post suggests.

If you wish to use a taxi, make sure you board only the red color Riga Taxi cab. Others may be not 100% honest to foreigners. Price to Victoria by taxi one way should be around 10 GBP (7-8 lats). You may ask a driver before boarding.

About a night life I would suggest not to follow any girl's invitations to any pub/bar in Old Riga. Make your own choice instead. Carefully check the menu prices before ordering including all small print not te be surprised about the bill. Good luck!

I haven't found a honest taxi driver in Riga. Red taxis are just as dishonest in my experience. Just take the bus which is across from the airport car-park. They now charge 0.80 LVL for baggage and take great delight in fining tourists who are not aware of the fact. You need to get off outside Stockmans department store and then walk the 5-10 mains to your hotel. If you you want to go straight to your hotel by taxi, make sure you agree a price before setting off. If they won't, don't get in. (10-12 LVL is about the going rate for tourists).

Travel Tips for Riga

Gothic pearl

by Raimix

Riga mostly have German style of Gothic architecture and I found much churches, buildings that are made of gothic style. Influence of the occupation of Germans are very visible - some German writings that left on buildings, Protestantism religion form, Hansa city status and so on.

Latvian language

by Vija_v

Latvian language is a bit similar to German, at least during my trips when I was talking Latvian, people was asking am i from Germany.

As in Latvia lives just a bit over 2,5 million people and only half of them are Latvians, our language can be considered as not very popular.
It is quiet complicated to learn it, because even you speak Latvian but are traveling
around Latvia, you can hear some dialects which might sound very different. And not
always u will understand what people are trying to tell you.

Some most needed words:
Hello - Labdien!
Please- Ludzu
Thank you - Paldies
How are you? - Ka tev iet?
Good bye - Uz redzesanos!
My name is___ - Mani sauc____

THE MARKET

by Avieira67

I like very much to visit markets, and here in Riga there is a great market very well located, just in front of both train station and bus station.
Here you find some places (bars) where you can taste the local food.

Be careful in Riga's nightlife

by krisara

Planning a trip to Riga? Cheap place, friendly people, no trouble. right? WRONG! Oh my god. Ive now travelled all over the world, and this place is the biggest rip off in the world. A 5 minute taxi ride = 8 Lats (8 pounds, 12 Euros), this was not just one taxi, this was every taxi. This is with or without the meter. Also, beer = 1.5-3 Lats, London prices my friends. Nightclub entrance, 5 Lats, what do the locals pay? 0.5 Lats. This is also the unfriendliest place i have EVER been to. I heard about the bad reputation this place had before i went, i just thought i could avoid several wallet lootings, but there was no reasoning with these unfriendly eastern european idiots. Why go to Eastern Europe, when your going to be paying Barcelona/Milan/London prices? And to top it off, random attacks for no reason on my english counterparts left us all feeling very very angry. Any help from the police? Bouncers? Absolutly no chance! This place will be a flash in the pan as for as tourism is concerned, and once this places bad reputation catches up, the rip off bars, taxis, restaurants, hotels and everyone else can go back to working in a factory for zero money. I strongly advise you to go elsewhere.

ryan air!!!!!!!!!!

by jdee2002

i really passonatly do feel i need to blow there trumpet after the spout of bad press.
Facts about ryan air.
1. yes, make sure you read the small print, this being your baggage allowence, if your going for a weekend or something and just taking 3 or 4 change of clothes, take a small rucksack, with the weight being under 10 kg, there is no charge!, we paid 4 pence return for 2, plus £40 taxes, how can you moan at that!.

2. you get into the aircraft, yes it is bland, no tv, suspicious stains on seats, but what do you want, for an extra £200 go and fly BA,
3. staff were more than helpfull, example, on our way home, one of the air stewards even offered to take us from the airport to the bus station in liverpool, would you ever get that from ba or brittania, i doubt it, my personal views of them is this, there a no nonsence carrier, taking you from point a to point b, nothing more, nothing less, hence there price, hence there the most punctual airline in europe (they dont tell you that on the news)

ryan air would be my number one choice to travel with again.
