Skiing in Latvia
by histamin32
Sigulda boasts several skiing tracks. They are lit during nights and are open late during weekends, that is until midnight or even 1am.
Kakiskaln is the steepest track in Latvia. Skiing equipment (skis, boots and poles) can be rent directly at the skiing stations. English is spoken, so no problem ...
Gauja river - second longest in Latvia!
by Raimix
It is so nice that there are two longest rivers of Latvia - Daugava and Gauja - near each other, mostly in Riga region.
It is said, that Daugava is long, wide, but quite silent river, without big stream. Gauja, vice versa, is smaller one, but having big stream.
You can see Gauja river when crossing bridge on your way to Turaida.
Turaida Castle
by ealgisi
Turaida Castle is a recently reconstructed medieval castle in Turaida, in the Vidzeme region of Latvia, on the opposite bank of the Gauja River from Sigulda.
The castle was constructed in the Brick Gothic style in 1214 under Albert, archibishop of Riga, on the site of the destroyed wooden castle of the Livonian leader Kaupo. Construction and development of the fortifications continued to the 17th century, when the castle started to lose its strategic importance. It was badly damaged by fire in 1776 and not reconstructed, and in the course of time fell into ruin.
Restoration began in the 1970s and the castle is now the centrepiece of the Turaida Museum Reserve, which also includes the oldest wooden church in Vidzeme and its surrounding Livonian cemetery, containing the grave of Maija, the Rose of Turaida; Dainu Hill, now a sculpture park celebrating Latvian folksong; and the beautifully landscaped castle grounds.
Krimulda Palace and Estate
by MalenaN
The manor house was built in the middle of the 19th century. It was turned into a tuberculosis hospital and it is today a sanatorium for children. In front of the manor house is a long wooden summer pavilion. There is a café which is open every day during summer and only on Saturdays and Sundays the rest of the year. It was closed when I visited.

Present castle was built in the 13th century on the place where was wasted wooden castle of old Livs'. The castle existed till the middle of 18th century when it richly suffered from fire, later it wasn't restored, only nowadays there were research and restoration works. The castle in old times interested many conquerors, which battled for it, also Polish and Swedes. There is a legend, which is closely connected with the castle, it tells about Turaida Rose, a girl who give her life for love.
Inside there are many collections with interesting things from past times. Also from the main tower is very beautiful view to the region.
The entering price I think was approx. 2 Lats.
