Travel Tips for Sigulda

Weddings

by ealgisi

While you are in Sigulda, don't be impressed if on Sathurday you see weddings and weddings around.
It's a local tradition to get married on Sathurday, and i counted 11 weddings in one day!

It seems that everyone who gets married comes to Sigulda to celebrate.

Turaida Castle

by Lunaina

In Sigulda you should do the Three Castles route. It starts with the cable car to Krimulda, then you walk through beautiful nature and on many steps .... to Turaida.... from Turaida you walk past caves (even the biggest cave of the Baltics!!!) to Sigulda Castle. Really Nice.

The best place is the Turaida Castle. The entrance fee is 2 Ls. It is a big reserve where you can also walk a lot, and visit the castle and go all the way to the top and enjoy spectacular views of the Gauja River area!

New Sigulda Castle

by Airpunk

The new Sigulda castle was built as a residence just a couple of meters away from the old one’s ruins. This 19th century estate with its beautiful gardens is now owned by the city of Sigulda and used as an administration building. The park and gardens are open for public. A path behind this castle leads to the ruins of the old one.

“Folk Song Hill"

by Lilasel

Finally, have a walk through the park which is devoted to that fragile heritage of centuries flown past - the folk songs and dance. The stone sculptures are made by Indulis Ranka and they show the mentality of the Latvian nation, rooted in nature and folklore.

Turaida red castle

by Raimix

Turaida castle is the most impressive in this place, on my opinion.
Brick catsle of Turaida, after one other wooden, that was burned before by German Crusaders, built in 1214. This castle was ruled by archbishops of Riga between 1214 and 1566.
Now it is quite famoius place in Latvia, some exhibitions are held, from the castle tower you can see very good panorama of forested areas. It is said, these areas have the most beautiful look at autumn, when trees have difderent colours of leaves.
Around castle area it is possible to see other things - like old wooden church, sculptures park.
