The children friendly town
by 68maciek
I found this city as the most interesting for my children (8 and 11), and unexpectly nice. My favourite suprise in Lativa and Lithuania so far.
Nobody has wriiten about one of our favourite yet- Jurmala Park at the seaside- (as name in Latvian says I guess:-).There was wooden toys for children, and the wodden raft- ferry on the small pond- which gave a lot of fun to my children.Thera was a small open air folk museum, a open air water park with tobogans, and a nice camping nearby.
Jugendstill architecture
by Raimix
Seems that after all constructions and reconstructions the most loved style in old part of Ventspils is Jugendstill. Wandering around you could see houses with beautiful Jugensdtill architecture, the same as in other places in Latvia, let’s say, Riga.
Actually this style shows itself, that not so much older than 100 – 150 years houses left, but old town is still cozy and picturesque.
Feeling of history
by LanaFromRiga
Reconstructed architectures are very nice and beautiful, but sometimes is necessary to feel, taste, touch really historical building. It is a great possibility to realise this in Ventspils. This amazing old building is near the Ventspils Marketplace not far from tourist information centre and promenad.
Historical moments of the caste of Ventspils
by LanaFromRiga
The castle of Ventspils not always was used like the castle. When Latvia was the part of Soviet Union the castle used like the barracks for soviet soldiers. The main tower ground floor used like punishment cell. Nowadays you can see some things from these times.
Ventspils Radio Astronomy centre in Irbene
by Raimix
The Baltic Sea cost at Soviet times was quite much militarized, as it was good strategic point for USSR. The same happened in or around main ports of Baltic state countries (Liepaja, Ventspils, Klaipeda, so on).
A few kilometers from Ventspils there is a big satellite located, in older times the place was forbidden for locals; nowadays it is acceptable for all. Be careful to walk around, as you still could feel the traces of military basis (lot of metal fence remains, split in dunes, quite sharp ones, that could hurt your leg even if you with shoes).
Satellite is biggest in Northern Europe and 8th biggest in World.
Irbene is about 35 kilometers from Ventspils.
