Daugirdas Hotel

Very comfortable business/leisure hotel in the Old Town. Interesting design and mix of old and new. I thoroughly enjoyed my buffet breakfast in the ancient cellar/breakfast room. Nice! Good view from the rooftop terrace. Excellent location for visiting the castle and strolling along the river but a fair walk from the bus station but worth it.

Assuming you want to be based in the Old Town, this hotel s super. It's a long way from the bus and railway stations though (30+ minutes walk). Trolleybus 5 from bus/railway station will drop you 5 minutes walk away; get off when you see the large Iki supermarket.

Daugirdas is part reallly old (but modernised) building, part brand-spanking-new. Rooms are large, with extremely comfortable beds (imo), very clean, flat-screen TV, minibar, 'continuous power' sockets for charging (the keycard works the electricity otherwise). My room had bath as well as shower, which was much appreciated after a long day's walking in drizzly chilly rain.

Staff are pleasant and courteous, with good English. Breakfast is in the 16th-century cellars, with a good range of hot and cold foods. There is also a restaurant (which I did not use), a rooftop terrace bar (ditto) and the foyer has a bar too.

Free internet in the foyer and free wifi in the rooms.

The hotel has an agreement with a local taxi company, so you can get their charges put on your bill if you wish. This was useful for getting to./from the airport.

The hotel is few seconds from the riverside and the road has very little traffic. Double-glazing and air con are both efficient, so you should be able to get a good night's sleep.

There was a modern jazz concert in the foyer one night I was here. Guests had free entrance, but I didn't take advantage...not my sort of music.

Highly recommended if you want good quality accommodation at a very reasonable price (I booked through www.booking.com and got an excellent deal).

Directions: Too complicated to explain. Look at a streetmap of the Kaunas Old Town! Hotel is less than a minute from the main square, the cathedral, the 'Thunder house' and the river......less than 5 minutes from the castle.
