Statues of Kaunas
by HORSCHECK
When wandering around Kaunas you will discover quite a few statues.
After Lithuania's independence in 1990 all communist related statues have been moved to Grutas Park which is a sort of sculpture park for tourists.
Information about the Monument to Vytautas the Great and the Monument to Steponas Darius and Stasys Girenas can be found in seperate tips.
Other important statues include the following ones:
The naked figure of A Man is the work of sculptor Petras Mazuras and has been erected in 1991. It can be found outside the Mykolas Zilinskas Art Museum.
The Monument to Antanas Smetona was installed in 1996 and is located near Vilniaus gatve 33. He was the first President of Lithuania (1919-1920).
The Monument to Motiejus Valancius can be found near the Church of the Holy Trinity. He was a well known bishop and died in 1875 in Kaunas.
Castle
by bugulma
Castle is situated near of the old town on the Neman River bank. The castle was the first building of the citty in the middle of XIV century and Kaunas, as town, grew around the castle. In 1361 Theotonic Order made a siege of the castle and got it. After XV century the castle lost its military importance and it became residence. In XVI and XVII centuries for some years the castle was used for military by ithuanian and Swedish but not long time. In XVIII century the castle was a prison. Since 1960 there is museum.
Vilniaus Street
by bugulma
Vilniaus Street is full of old houses and churches and I think if there were no people and shops then you feel in medivial town somewhere. The street is begun in Ratusa Square and goes along the old town to the East. Then the street flows to Laisves Aleja, with St Michael Archangel Church in the end.
Cameras, alarms, heavy doors, gratings
by matcrazy1
Most small businesses like restaurants, stores/shops were equipped with street cameras, alarms and heavy wooden doors, like on my picture. Add gratings at windows on the ground floor of many houses. Was it casual anti-theft protection or a sign of very high risk of burglary in Kaunas?
Well, I felt in Kaunas as safe as in, say Berlin, Wien or Krakow :-).
Lithuanian, English and German
by matcrazy1
The basic information for visitors at points of tourist attractions was written usually in three languages in Kaunas: in Lithuanian, English and German. Look at ticket information at Ceramics Museum, on my picture.
I found it quite different than in Vilnius where Polish and Russian instead of German language ruled.
