A one day trip from Kaunas to Siauliai- is it possible?

by travelerfromtheSouth

Hello,

I am going to Kaunas next week for work purposes
Unfortunately I am not staying long and I only got 2 days of my own to visit around
I saw this place on the internet called " The Hill of Crosses" and it sounds interesting

Is there a bus or a train that goes there from Kaunas to Siauliai to make round trip in one day? I know it is far, but I am willing to go very early

Thanks

The girl from the South

Technically it is possible. "Hill of crosses" is outside of Siauliai which makes it more complicated.

BUT-

Travel Kaunas-Siauliai is at least 3 h, back - also 3 h,. Then to the hill and back say 30 min. Do you really want to spend roughly 7 hours on the bus (and in the terminal) just for 15-30-60 minutes at Hill of croses???

And in my personal view it is not woth the hype. To me it is more pagan than catholic worship place....

If you want to check timetables and buy tickets go here:
http://www.autobusubilietai.lt/

From Siauliai you have to take bus to JONISKIS:
7.25 8.25 10.25 12.15 13.10 14.15 15.40 17.05
Get off at DOMANTU stop(third from Siauliai).

From DOMANTU to Siauliai:
8.02 9.37 10.55 12.12 13.20 14.20 15.07 17.32

Yes-it's possible, but it takes long time.
You can also check for trains to Siauliai

www.litrail.lt

As for that guy's reply...Yeah, we Lithuanians were the last pagans in Europe and we still have some remains of our old traditions. That's what makes us interesting. And Hill of Crosses is not just a religious worship place. It's also a our resistance memorial started originally in XIX century to remember those who were killed or sent to Siberia. And when during Soviet times authorities tried to take away the crosses - the more they took , the more people brought back. By the way now the franciscan monks take care of the place and i think they have a guest house. So if you have 2 days maybe that can be a choise taking afternoon bus and sleeping over there and after visiting the Hill going back to Kaunas the next day.
Anyway, if you need any help about Kaunas just write me and i'll be glad to help you:)
Good luck
Remi:)

Travel Tips for Kaunas

Statues of Kaunas

by HORSCHECK

When wandering around Kaunas you will discover quite a few statues.

After Lithuania's independence in 1990 all communist related statues have been moved to Grutas Park which is a sort of sculpture park for tourists.

Information about the Monument to Vytautas the Great and the Monument to Steponas Darius and Stasys Girenas can be found in seperate tips.

Other important statues include the following ones:

The naked figure of A Man is the work of sculptor Petras Mazuras and has been erected in 1991. It can be found outside the Mykolas Zilinskas Art Museum.

The Monument to Antanas Smetona was installed in 1996 and is located near Vilniaus gatve 33. He was the first President of Lithuania (1919-1920).

The Monument to Motiejus Valancius can be found near the Church of the Holy Trinity. He was a well known bishop and died in 1875 in Kaunas.

Castle

by bugulma

Castle is situated near of the old town on the Neman River bank. The castle was the first building of the citty in the middle of XIV century and Kaunas, as town, grew around the castle. In 1361 Theotonic Order made a siege of the castle and got it. After XV century the castle lost its military importance and it became residence. In XVI and XVII centuries for some years the castle was used for military by ithuanian and Swedish but not long time. In XVIII century the castle was a prison. Since 1960 there is museum.

Vilniaus Street

by bugulma

Vilniaus Street is full of old houses and churches and I think if there were no people and shops then you feel in medivial town somewhere. The street is begun in Ratusa Square and goes along the old town to the East. Then the street flows to Laisves Aleja, with St Michael Archangel Church in the end.

Cameras, alarms, heavy doors, gratings

by matcrazy1

Most small businesses like restaurants, stores/shops were equipped with street cameras, alarms and heavy wooden doors, like on my picture. Add gratings at windows on the ground floor of many houses. Was it casual anti-theft protection or a sign of very high risk of burglary in Kaunas?

Well, I felt in Kaunas as safe as in, say Berlin, Wien or Krakow :-).

Lithuanian, English and German

by matcrazy1

The basic information for visitors at points of tourist attractions was written usually in three languages in Kaunas: in Lithuanian, English and German. Look at ticket information at Ceramics Museum, on my picture.
I found it quite different than in Vilnius where Polish and Russian instead of German language ruled.
