Modern art stuff in old houses
by satara
I can wander in the old town of Kaunas and every time I can find there something new.. Like these modern art galleries in some old houses dating back to XIX century. I like to come in there and capture a good doze of creative ideas for my imagination. And if you wanna buy something, you can find there some really cool stuff and buy exclusive art works..
More info?

Before I went to Kaunas:
1. I read some pages on Kaunas on Virtual Tourist here
2. I used the tool "Find Hotel Deals" on the above page to check the prices of accommodations (hmm... I couldn't book any as I wasn't sure my dates).
3. I read latest discussions on Kaunas in VT Travel Forum here.
4. I bought Polish version of Rough Guide travel book to Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Kaliningrad district and a map of these countries.
In Kaunas I bought a leaflet "Kaunas Klaipeda, Essential city guides" from a series "in your pocket". It was very useful city guide to both Kaunas and Klaipeda, available at each kiosk (8.00 Lt); simply, my recommendation. The guide contained general info on Lithuania and:
- arriving in Kaunas
- where to saty
- where to eat
- by night
- what to see
- culture & events
- getting around
- shopping
- directory
- two maps of Kaunas centre/downtown (1:15.000 and 1:25.000) - enough for walking tours around but not enough for driving visitors.
On the web I found tons of info on the following portals:
Kaunas in your pocket - the best internet service on Kaunas in my opinion;
Kaunas - official webpage of Lithuanian government available in English, French, German, Lithuanian, Polish and Russian;
Tourist Information Centre of Kaunas Region - in English, German and Lithuanian;
Kaunas City Municipality - English version is relatively poor.
Enjoy :-)
Russian writings?
by matcrazy1
It WAS local custom in Kaunas, Lithuania and other Soviet republics to put writings in Russian language everywhere. Just one example, on my picture: info on how to use the phone was put exclusively in Russian on a public phone displayed in Communications History Museum now.
Well, in my country, Poland, there were no writings in Russian that time (before 1990). I think that in contrast to Lithuania the Polish nature of Poland (including the language) was never in danger.
Windows of old Kaunas
by matcrazy1
Contemporary window was ususally a casement window in Kaunas.
As I noticed, windows of the old Kaunas were usually divided by muntins for at least 9 parts with 9 panes. This one, on my picture, had 24 panes and was located on the 2nd floor of Medziotoju Uzeiga, upclass hunters' restaurant at Town Hall Square # 10.
