train

by tt.tatia

hi i need to know can i get to klaipeda by train from riga and what is the train cost

Re: train

by leics

According to:

http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml

you can, but it is a very long journey.

You would do better to take a bus, I think.

http://www.eurolines.ee/en/node

will give you information. Journey takes around 5.5 hours, one-way cost 18.90 euro (online booking fare).

See http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?S=Klaipeda&Z=Riga for timetables (site of the German railway company DB, but features all European timetables).

You need to go to Vilnius first, then to Daugavpils, where you have to spend the night and can continure to Riga next morning. More than 21 hours. For just 220 km (by air) that's surely the worst I've ever seen.

For ticket prices call +370 5 2330088. See http://www.litrail.lt/

There's a direct bus, though, leaves 8:35, arrives 14:00. See http://www.klap.lt/?en=start

Wonder if there might be a ferry, too.

Re: train

Hello,

If you like travelling by train, then you could also go for a mix of bus and train. You could go by bus from Riga (LV) to Siauliai (LT) and from there by train to Klaipeda.

The train trip from Siauliai to Klaipeda takes only about 2-3 hours. Also you could spend one night in Siauliai and visit teh famous Hill of Crosses, one of the most bizarre sights in Lithuania. You find more info about this on my Siauliai page.

I hope this helps

I have been that route and it is best by Bus from Riga to Klaipeda. It is a 5 hour trip and cost about 45 or 50 LTL. The bus goes first to Liepaja then on to Klaipeda.

Travel Tips for Klaipeda

Architecture in the Old Town

by HORSCHECK

Klaipeda's Old Town is home to many half-timbered (Fachwerk) buildings which were built in the 18th and 19th century. This architectural style was influenced by Germanic cuture and is known for its large wooden frames in walls and ceilings.
Nowadays many of the old buildings house galleries, museums, little souvenir shops or cafes.

Famous people of Klaipeda

by HORSCHECK

When thinking about famous people from Klaipeda the German poet Simon Dach (1605-1659) probably springs to one's mind at first. He wrote the well known folk song Ann from Tharau (Ännchen von Tharau)".
Other famous people include the astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm Argelander (1799-1875) and Michael Wohlfahrt (1687-1741) who was a religious leader in Pennsylvania.

Beer from Klaipeda: Svyturys

by HORSCHECK

Klaipeda is home to Lithuania's oldest brewery: Svyturys. It was established in 1784 and produces various sorts of beer like wheat beer (Baltas), dark beer (Baltijos) and of course lager beer (Ekstra).

Nowadays Svyturys is owned by Baltic Beverages Holding which is controlled by the Carlsberg breweries.

On my trip through Lithuania I tried a few Lithuanian beers and I must admit that Svyturys Ekstra was among my favourites.

Lonely Planet Guide: Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania

by HORSCHECK

The Baltic States are rapidly developing countries, therefore an up to date guidebook is very helpful. I used the Lonely Planet Guide "Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania which offers information for all budgets on what to see and do, and tips on dining and accomodation.

Many means to reach Klaipeda

by lotharlerch

You can reach Klaipeda by boat from Mukran at the German island of Rügen or from Kiel. By car on an excellent motorway from Vilnius and Kaunas but it is far the nicer landscape when you go from Kaunas the road along the river Nemunas which for a part forms the border to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, the former Königsberg. The second biggest town of this area, still having the name Sovietsk(!!), the former Tilsit, is just over a bridge. But you would need a Russian visa to visit the Kaliningrad district. Klaipeda can also be reached by train from Vilnius/Kaunas.
