Castle
by bugulma
I think I am right if I name it Castle remains because now you can see only destroyed walls and towers of the castle. The castle was mentioned first time in 1252 as Memelburg and was conrolled by Livonian order. The castle was destroyed several times in XIV-XV century and fully restorated in 1538-1550 as the main Livonian fortress in Lithuanian territories. But then the importance of the place fell and last fortifications were destroyed in 1872-1874. After WWII the shipbuilding works was placed here but after USSR collapsed there is decision to move works out till 2009. Now there is a little museum on the territory of the castle that you can see for LTL 4 (EUR 1.1).
Mary Queen of Peace Church
by bugulma
If you leave the old town and go along Talkos Prospekt you see this church on the left. The church was built in 1960-1962 using private funds but it was closed just after finishing of the building works and turned into the concert hall (it was Soviet times). The services began in 1988. The guidebooks say there is wonderful view of the old town from the church tower. The entrance to the tower was closed when I visit the church in the second half of the day.

Aquarium and Dolphinarium (aka Sea Museum)
Address: Smiltynes 3, In Summer closed on Mondays. Dolphin shows: midday, 2pm, 4 pm.
Built in an old fort, the aquarium houses many animals. You can see fishes, penguins, seals, sea lions and other ocean-sea animals here and their performances sometimes too. In the Dolphinarium - Dolphins shows with performances of Sea lions and etc.. Very beautiful aquariums.
Want to boast about one project :) , it is taking part in the project of restoring seals population in the Baltic Sea. This May they released 6 new seals grown in the 'museum' hoping they will settle not far away from Lith at least. one of the seals has a misrosheme mounted in him and you can watch his migration ways on the internet 24 hours a day.
To get there - Ferry to Smiltyne or a private boat directly to the Sea Museum (Ferry is also very comfortable and goes often). Btw, horse and bugy rides available while there.
Beer Restaurant in an Old Warehouse Building
by lotharlerch about Alaus Darykla Restoranas Memelis
This rather new restaurant is in an about 100 years old former warehouse building. In warm weather you can even sit outside not far from the Dane river. I was there for the beer and had to it a snack (boiled peas with hot cracklings), snacks of this type (tasty!) are very popular to the beer in Lithuania and Latvia. But they offer quite a lot good dishes, the menu is also in English and German.
