I am coming to Panevezys in April, 2009 to do some family history searching.
Does anybody know somebody who does this regularly, so that some preparatory
has been done?

You can try to ask at www.panevezys.lt -> "Ask questions", just tell your story and ask what do you want. Can't guess about the results, but it's better to prepare the municipality clerks for your visit in advance, or receive a reply with a redirection or explanation or something. Even no answer would be sort of answer ;).
Hi Robert, I would recomend you to contact govermental institution in Panevezys, I mean archives. I have heard they do geneological tree for 500 Litas. But you know better what you want there, so please, contact.

The most popular place in Panevezys is the part of the rive Nevezis, which lays in the centre of Panevezys & is called 'Senvage'.All bigger events or concerts(if they are held outside) take place somewhere near this place.There are some small islands decorated with sculptures & big trees.This is also very popular place to take wedding pics:)
There are of course several churches and cathedral in Panevezys but this small Russian Orthodox Church is my favourite. There is also an old grave yard but I have not found my great-grandfather's grave. I first spotted the church when I was on the bus coming from Kaunas.
Near the Holy Trinity church which is on Nepriklausomybes square. The Russian church is on T. Tilvycio gatve.
At first, this city has a definate " blue collar, working class" feel to it. Auto repair shops, small factories and the ubiquitous Soviet era flats dominate the town. A few restaurants and cafes as well as places which sell beer and other drink also add to the local colour. However, just on the outskirts of the town some rather " up scale" looking, modern private homes, many of them rather spacious looking with 3 storeys with room to spare seem to be mushrooming in the area. This is a town which one would go to only if a cousin or relative were living here or in transit on a bus rather than making a special trip to this city. If others have a different impression I gladly welcome their comments!
In September 2003 the city celebrates its 500th anniversary. It is situated midway between Vilnius and Riga. Unfortunately the city has been distroyed in both wars so that only few old buildings remain.

Panevezys is the 5th largest city,and administrative centre,informally referred to as the capital of the aukstaitija region.the city occupies an area of 50squarekm. close to the river Nevezis. compared with the other lithuanian cities, pan. is the most densely inhabitede.its pop. also has the highest & of ethnic lithuanians of all major lithuanian cities.
altogether, 25% of the working pop. is employed at industrial interprises, which produce 80% of the city's domestic product. although pan.is surounded by good agricultural land, it remins chiefly an industrial city, with over 6,500 registered enterprises.
pan. is well known for its TV & electronic equipment,glass & pottery, textiles & clothing.production is exported to over 50 diferent countries.
pan. is located atride the main Vilnius to Riga road, which of the Lithuanian side is largely amodern, four-lane highway. a military airfield close to the city is due to be used for commercial purposes.
panevezys was founded in 1503.it is twinned with the number of cities in western europe:Oss in the Netherlands, Lunen in Germany, Kalmar in Sweden.international relations broadened after the Balto-Scandian Academy was established 1991., which is known for its international conferences, literary research & library.
These lands for a long time were almost without people.It hapened so cos of the wars.
Only in the end of XV -the begining of XVI century people started to move there. In the begining of XVI the town of Panevezys was established.
1614 - the first stone house was built.
1727 -the first monks moved to the town and established the first school in Panevezys.
In the begining of XIX century population of Panevezys was 800 people.But in 1897 there were already 13000 people.
After the II World War there were established a lot of factories.Though there were not many schools or universities,the theatre of Panevezys was the best in Lithuania.
