Rental costs in Vilnius

by buckrodgers

Just curious what the apartment rental costs in the old city is for say, a nice apartment with a nice view of 60-70 square meters as well as one that is 90-100 square meters?

Are there any English-friendly websites commonly used to find an apartment in Vilnius?

These are most famous agencies in Lithuania, but of course, they take some extra money for service...

I once stayed in an appartment that I booked with www.litinterp.lt in Old Town Vilnius and another one in Old Town Kaunas.

Labas... Check out www.euapartments.lt. It's a good website, choices are nice, most all in Old Town, and an apartment for two may be had for 50 Euro per day.

Travel Tips for Vilnius

City between forests

by Raimix

I am always admired about a lot of green areas in Vilnius. Even historical places, banks of river Neris, some regional parks and oldtown's squares remained green.
For example, green banks of Neris is a good place to do air-baloon championships, just to walk and so on.

Another admirable thing is people living there are really helpful and quick. It's interesting to get into old city (especially churches) and see a friendly atmosphere and mixed styles of architecture. It's enjoyable to have a free time in various Vilnius bars and coffes.

What could it be?

This mysterious object, looking like an iron hook stuck through a stone on wheels, can be found in a street corner near St Michael's Church. We have both been wondering what purpose it might serve as it seems to be or have been a tool to perform some work. But neither of us has the slightest idea what it is or was for. For all we know, it might just have been a joke played on the passers-by. But perhaps you might hit on a better idea?

Padlocks on the bridge

by tord

When visiting Vilnius you have to go to the Uzupis neighbourhood by crossing the Uzupis bridge. Couples who have decided to share their lives together and to eternalise their marriage use a padlock to symbolise their inseperable love. They attach a padlock to this bridge and having locked it in place they throw the key into the river Vilnia so that the waters will carry it away and no-one will be able to unlock the union. Ahhhhhhh.
Uzupis considers itself to be an independent republic, an unofficial breakaway from Lithuania. They have their own constitution which declares that "everyone has the right to be happy or unhappy, to love and take care of the cat". Guide books claim that it is populated by arists, squatters and drunks but i consider myself to be quite respectable and i fitted in quite well.
The pub right on the riverside was lively and was full of visitors and locals.

How Christianity changed Lithuanian mentality

by Redule

When Lithuania was a pagan country (until the end of XIV age), Vilnius emblem depicted the giant from fairy tales Alkis carrying his wife Janteryte on his shoulders across the river.

Now St. Christopher carries the Infant Jesus on his shoulders.

Not only the old town

by matcrazy1

I was a little bit surpriced to see quite many new and modern buildings around the old town. They were put up in recent years and some of them were still under construction.

Vilnius seems to be really fast changing and growing city. I do hope the old town will survive in its original, authentic shape. Well, as I noticed Lithuanian approach to the national heritage I am almost sure about it. Good luck :-).
