Train Travel

by yvr

I have been looking on the DB site and the PKP website regarding train travel from Vilnius to Warsaw. I can find the schedule but no prices are given. Would appreicate a ball park figure for this trip, 2nd class is fine. Thanks

Re: Train Travel

Bahn.de only gives fares for/from Germany.

For fares for/from other countries you need to look at the country's railway website.

However, I could not find fares on the Lithuanian railway website either:

http://www.litrail.lt/wps/portal

The wonderful man in seat 61 suggests a fare from Warsaw of around 140 Polish zloty/24GBP (ish):

http://www.seat61.com/Lithuania.htm (scroll down...there's a section on the Vilnius > Warsaw route).

Re: Train Travel

Seat61 as always gives incorrect/outdated prices...
Direct one way ticket costs app.20 euro, plus if you buy return, then special "interstate" discount works as well, so you pay even less, than two one way tickets...

Re: Train Travel

Thanks to both of you for your advice. I will be travelling on October 10 a Saturday, is there much of a problem in general purchasing a ticket 3 or 4 days prior to the travel date?

Re: Train Travel

by yvr

Now that I have put in the date I wish to travel on the train, I find that it is only offered overnight and it is a bus. So will be flying instead, thanks again to the two posters above who gave me advice.

Re: Train Travel

by kopvas

If you will travel by daytime connecting trains Vilnius-Sestokai and Sestokai-Warsaw, then you don't need to worry - tickets are without reservation, so not limited in number...
If you intend to travel by night bus (PKP bus instead of train), then it is better to buy ticket in advance. But I personally doubt that it will be full, as far as I seen not a lot of people traveling on it.

Re: Train Travel

20 euro is, sadly, not far off 24GBP. :-( Putting any prices on any website is always problematic, for obvious reasons.

Re: Train Travel

You said you were traveling in Oct. so I'm assuming it's not too late to write this. I wanted to tell you that you made the right decision to fly. I have been on both the train from Warsaw to Vilnius and the bus from Vilnius to Warsaw. The train goes through Belarus and requires a visa. I got kicked off the train at the border at 2am for not having one. The bus was fine, but is ten hours long and not very comfortable. You will be much happier flying.

Re: Train Travel

stjonkus, the day time connecting trains already for many years go via Suwalki-Sestokai and doesn't get into Belarus whatsoever, even overnight train (when it existed) via SUW2000 system went via Sestokai.
So I think it is your problem that you've boarded the train and didn't know that it goes via Belarus.
Nowadays it will be strange enough to go from Warsaw to Lithuania via Belarus ;)

Travel Tips for Vilnius

Third Best City

by mrdarius

According to www.vilnius.lt,

"The annual ratings announced by London Survey Company “Mercer Human Resource Consulting” (there were 215 cities rated) prove that Vilnius, according to its quality of life and security, is the third top ranked city in Eastern Europe! Vilnius is considered to be more secure than Milan, Athens or Rome.

Within the scope of the rating of quality, produced according to 39 aspects, Lithuanian and Slovenian capital cities received 83.5 points. The best place to live in the Eastern Europe is Prague, the Czech capital city, which received 87.5 points as well as Budapest (87 points)."

A lot of famous people visit Vilnius. In all shapes, as you can see:). So, don’t be pompous and come to Vilnius too!

If you are Pope, Bush, Charles or the other distinguished personality, you are especially welcomed, because Vilnius municipality pays special attention to repairing of roads and buildings on such occasions.

Lithuanian beer: Svyturys

by HORSCHECK

Svyturys is a popular beer brand in Lithuania. The brewery is located in Klaipeda and was established in 1784.

They produce various sorts of beer like wheat beer (Baltas), dark beer (Baltijos) and of course lager beer (Ekstra).

Nowadays Svyturys is owned by Baltic Beverages Holding which is controlled by the Carlsberg breweries.

On my trip through Lithuania I tried a few Lithuanian beers and I must admit that Svyturys Ekstra was among my favourites.

Tolerance of nations and religions

by Raimix

All nations have a good relationships between each other. History has showed - Vilnius from its appear is a multicultural city. It was called even "Northern Jerusalem".

If you are walking in Vilnius you can see a lot of different monuments for religions: catholic, protestantic and orthodox churches, mosques, religion centres of Karaites.

It was written on the old town's house in my picture - "There lives Belarus! Lives Byelorussian Vilnius"!

New times, new signs

by matcrazy1

Look at the advertisement of TOPO Centras (more in my shopping tips) on my picture. Nothing unique but... in the not so old past when Lithuania was occupied by the Soviet Union I couldn't see it.

Instead, there were monumental statues of Lenin and other communist "heroes" and large banners of communist party and other Soviet institutions often decorated by red flags. Quite different world now.
