Tower of Cathedral
The tower is the part of the cathedral square ensembel. Now it is 57 meters high and the belfry was completed in XIX century. It is easily seen that the tower has several round tiers. The lowest one dates back to XIV century.

Hi,
does anyone know how much taxi from airport to the center of vilnius costs ?
When I was there 3 weeks ago they were asking 31 Euro for the short trip. I didn't pay that but took the number 1 City bus that takes you either from Downtown Bus and train Station to the Airport or return for 1.1 LTL which is about 32 cents in Euro. You can buy the bus ticket from news stands or pay the driver 1.4 LTL when you get on. Don't forget to validate your ticket when you get on. There are little devices in several places on the bus to do that. There is a time schedule posted at the bus stop across from the train station showing the times for the bus from the City to the Airport, and I think there is a schedule at the airport. There are also minivans that cost about 3 to 5 Euro for the same trip if you see one.
Do not know exact price, but is overpriced with regard with local city tarifs.
Bus No 1 goes to Railway station /Bus terminal. Many trams to different parts of the city from there.
Bus No 2 passes trough central the part of the city to residential area Seskine on the other side.
Buses use the bridge which is under reconstruction, while taxis and other cars can not use it- must go around it.
Other option is mini bus No 15. It is combination of a bus and taxi. That means it has fixed route (trough the center as bus No 2, then to Santariskes), but it stops only when passengers ask - to get on/off, otherwise just go without stopping anywhere. Price 3 LTL. Not much space inside, so if you have big suitcases - probably not suitable for you. You can ask driver if he goes past the place you need and then he will drop off you there. They stop anywhere, not only at the bus stops. Be warned though - they drive like mad.

The first wooden fortifications were built in the beginning of XIV century by the great Duke Gediminas. Castle was built in the beginning of XV century by the great Duke Vytautas. It is situated on the hill and it is possible to go by feet or by funicular. On the hill there are tower of the castle, some fortifications and wonderful views to the city.
We stayed at the Barbacan Palace in Vilnius, every morning and evening we would see this van with a picture of Petras Austrevicius, one of the candidates in the current Presidential elections following the impeachment of Rolandas Paksas in April 2004 in a corruption scandal.
One morning I was sitting in the breakfast room at the hotel and saw him sitting on the couch speaking with another man. The best we could figure was that he was running his campaign out of the hotel.
I found a lot of old doors, wooden or stone sculptures, plaques, pictures etc. put like on my picture inside a few Vilnius churches. Unbelievable mess!
Well, most of catholic churches were closed by Soviet authorities in Vilnius. Some of them housed Soviet troops, served as for example warehouses or... Museum of Atheism. Not that bad as for example in Belarus and Ukraine many old churches and chapels were blown up by Soviet regime. In Vilnius the church of Three Crosses was blown up (only?) but many churches were less or more robbed and damaged.
They stay open since Lithuania regained independence in 1990 but still not all of them were renovated in 2004.
There was tall flagpole with large national flag of Lithuania (yellow - green - red) on the top of Gediminas tower. It was good orientation point as the flag and the tower was seen from the old town below the Gediminas Hill.
Well, was there a flag of foreign country (occupant) hoisted there before? The Soviet Union flag or red, communist flag? Flag of Poland, Russia etc. before?
From Saulene:
There was hoisted the flag of Poland and the flag of Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republik, which had a wide red stripe up, a thin white and a thin, but wider green stripes belove the red one. We explained that as a colony flag: the red stripe of Soviet Union flag was the widest, and two Lithuanian stripes of Tannenberg (Greenwood - Zalgiris (in Lithuanian)) battle
were taking less of place.
