Trip to Siaulai

by carolynl

Hi,
We will be in Vilnius and Kaunas for 4 days each and would like to go to the Hill of Crosses in Siaulai. Is it closer to go from Vilnius or Kaunas? Thanks.

Re: Trip to Siaulai

hi
In fact, Šiauliai is little bit closer to Kaunas . But the ride be only local roads. Part of the route from Vilnius goes on highway. So if you are hiring a car it would be faster from Vilnius. If you plan to take local bus or train, then i think it's faster from Kaunas. Last time when i went to Siauliai by bus it took about 3 hours, lots of short stops. Plus you'll need some extra hour for getting to the Hill of Crosses. So it would take all the day. Anyway check:

On the other hand maybe it would be better to go from Kaunas. And if you are staying in Vilnius 4 days - go to Trakai. Kaunas might be little be boring in summertime. But in weekends you can take boat trips in Kaunas lagoon or to Kulautuva. You can also visit Rumsiskes open air ethnography museum. Or Birstonas spa, they are maybe less than 1 hour ride from Kaunas.
Feel free to contact me if you'll need any question about Lithuania
have a good time

Travel Tips for Vilnius

Vt meeting

by Fen

I finally got the chance to meet up with my good friend Rasa along with her very good friend Milda also a VT member. They made me feel very welcome in Vilnius and it was fun at Gracas. Shame I missed the cocktail party the following day. Thank you ladies I hope its not to soon before you invite me back..?

A one day itinerary

by Dabs

If you only have one day, you might decide to skip the museums and just do a walking tour through Vilnius. Here's a good walking tour that hits most of the highlights:

Start at the Gates of Dawn at the south end of old town and head north up Ausros Vartu gatve, then Didzioji gatve and finally Pilies gatve which are the three streets that run through the old town. There are several interesting churches that you can enter should you have the time.

At the end of Pilies gatve you will be at Gediminas Hill, if it is Monday you will have to climb the hill if you want to see the view but every other day there is a funicular that will take you to the top.

After visiting the hill, head over to the cathedral, take a few minutes to look at the interior and then if you still have time you can walk west along Gedimino Prospect, the newer section of town.

St Teresa

by bugulma

On Ausrus Vartu, just after Gate of Dawn, if you go along to the Old Town, you see St Teresa. The church was built in 1633-1650. Wall paintings and altar date back to XVIII century. After damage of 1812 the church was completey restored inside.

Frank Zappa, freedom and Vilnius

by matcrazy1

Before my trip to Vilnius I wrote in my travel book that there was a monument to Frank Zappa (1940 - 1993) - rock music legend - in Vilnius. I was told that his monument became symbol and evidence of Lithuanian independence and freedom after long time of Soviet occupation. I didn't see that monument but I found this grafitti at the wall back to the monument to Lithuanian poet Liudas Gira. Hmm... what did it mean: B.B.D. pavasaris ???

Hmm... there is interesting store about freedom, Zappa and Vilnius here

From Saulene:
(...) The monument of Zappa in Vilnius (...) is not easy to find, because it is behind the building of the Polyclinic of Students in Pylimo street, near Petras Cvirka square on the corner with Pamënkalnio street. There used to be a nice graffiti there, too.

New houses and new Vilnius :-)

by matcrazy1

Except the new apartment buildings I could see new, quite pretty houses and quite many under construction. Will they build more such houses like on my picture soon? I am sure :-).

This house on my picture (and others around) stood close to my Crowne Plaza hotel (Mk Ciurlionio 84 St.) in an area west of the centre/downtown where there were many embassies of various countries located.
