Where can you park the tourist bus near to historic centre?

tnx.

Re: bus parking

by r13

For some time I do not live there anymore, but if it is not changed most buses park in the parking near Cathedral or on the Arsenalo street. Parking spaces are scarce as everywhere... Other possibility is Olimpieciu str. - across the river, near the Sport Hall.

Travel Tips for Vilnius

New town

by HORSCHECK

A complete contrast to the baroque Old Town of Vilnius is the so called New Town which was created after Lithuania's break from the Soviet Union.

Besides a modern shopping centre it is also home to the tallest skyscraper of the Baltic States.

The Europa Tower has a height of 148 m and was officially opened on the 1st May 2004 which was the day when Lithuania joined the European Union.

Another building which dominates the skyline of the New Town is the newly renovated 22-storey Reval Hotel Lietuva. It is the largest hotel in Vilnius and includes a Sky Bar which offers panoramic views of the city.

Directions:
The New Town is situated on the right bank of the Neris River in the Snipiskes district of Vilnius.

If you need need to exchange currency at the airport when departing then the currency exchange kiosk is located in the arrivals hall - cross the road from the departures hall to get there. The Vilnius inyourpocket guide is a goldmine of information. The April/May 2002 edition is now available and is in a new expanded and colourful format. It costs 8Lt. See also www.inyourpocket.com.

Vanishing evidences of devastation

by matcrazy1

Interiors of many Vilnius churches including the Church of St. Francis of Assisi (Bernardinai) were partly destroyed by time and mostly by the users in times when the churches stayed close during Soviet occupation. For example they fixed various cables destroying original walls with frescos of great historical value or they sticked some banners/posters on the walls which were removed together with frescos later.

I could see many sad evidences of human intolerance to religion and historical monuments in Vilnius in 2004. Although... most churches were under renovation. Maybe there will be no more suche images as on my pictures soon...

Although Lithuanian, the...

Although Lithuanian, the official language of Lithuania, belongs to the Baltic group and is not even related to Russian, you might hear some people in Vilnius speak some sort of Russian. Well, this is the Russian minority concentrated especially in Vilnius. And speaking of languages - English is widely understood and spoken although most Lithuanians will say theirs is 'not that good'. Believe me, it is!

Landmark of Vilnius and Lithuania

by matcrazy1

This tower on my picture was the western tower of the Upper Castle and was put above Vilnian old town, at the top of Gediminas Hill. There was tall flagpole with national flag of Lithuania put on its top.

The tower was called Gediminas Tower and was one of the best known landmarks of both Vilnius and Lithuania.
