Local Trolley Bus

by yvr

I will take the train from the Vilnius airport to the terminal in downtown Vilnius. From the railway station, what trolley bus number will take me to the closest stop to the Holiday Inn, Seimyniskiui 1?
Thanks

No 5. It stops in front of Railway station.
Get off at 6th stop "Zaliasis tiltas" - immediately when tolleybus crosses the river (ride takes about 15 minutes). Then walk forward (slightly to the hill) about 200 m. Your hotel is right on the corner of the streets (2nd crossing).

Actually you can take bus No 2 directly from the airport to the same stop - no need to change.

Other (fast) option is "Minibus" No 15 - it is special kind of buses. City transportation tickets are not valid - you pay cash to the driver. Last time price was 3 LTL. The minibus goes along preset fixed route but takes and drops off passengers anywhere they like on the route. So just ask driver that you need "Holiday Inn" and he will stop almost in front of the door. Downside - the minibus is small so you will not get in with big luggage.

Travel Tips for Vilnius

Lithuania's Chicago connection

by Dabs

Val Adamkus, the former President of Lithuania, was at one time the US EPA Region 5 director based in Chicago where my husband and father worked. I just think it's kind of cool that they knew the President of Lithuania :-) He is currently a candidate to replace the President of Lithuania that resigned under scandal and it looks like he is the frontrunner.

Dick Butkus, a former player for the Chicago Bears football team, was also of Lithuanian descent

More Lithuanians live in Chicago that anywhere outside Lithuania itself.

When I was in Vilnius it was the Lithuanian Archaeology exposition in museums. I remembered my archaeologies past (I studied history and I had the practise of archaeology in Latvia) and took this picture.

Beet roots, Kefir, and Calorie Bombs

by Telse

Two items within Lithuanian cuisine are complete opposites from each other, and both equally delicious. Saltisbarsciai is a beet root soup made of kefir, beet roots, dill, and a hardboiled egg. The end product is bright pink, delicious, and filling.

The second one is cepeliniai, which is shaped like a bomb and has pork in the middle. Think of it as a giant stuffed perogi. It's covered in a cream sauce, bacon fat, and bacon bits. Equally filling but your stomach will feel like lead.

Officials, US president and tears...

by matcrazy1

Being in most European capitals I could see in most of them temporarily closed streets and sometimes quite many convoys of officials guarded by heavy police forces. But not in Vilnius. Well, Vilnius is the capital of small country.

This diplomatic car on my picture, Swedish Volvo, with flag of my country, Poland was parked in front of Vilnius Town Hall. At this place on December 2002, the president of the USA, George Bush stood and congratulated Lithuania welcoming to NATO. Lithuania finally joined NATO on 29th March 2004. It was very touching to see (on TV news) tears of Lithuanian Prime Minister (or President) at the celebration of NATO enlargement. After many years of bondage and repressions under Soviet regime it's no wonder that he was moved to tears.

Red and white cats of Vilnius

by matcrazy1

I remember well large and black cats of Venice, huge cats of Rome and thin cats of Tunis, Tunisia.

Walking around Vilnius I met a few cats. Hmm... they were lazy and paid attention neither to me nor to my camera. Well, they were similar one to another, at least in colour of fur: red (or rather orange ?) and white mostly. Did they all have one and the same grandfather?
