Dinant to Echternach + accomodation
by pepemorris11
My husband and I will be leaving Dinant Belgium for Echternach. Unfortunately, i can't seem to find the cost of train 2nd class from Dinant to Echternach.
1)Is there a direct train?
2)How much will it cost? one way?
3) From there we will stay for 4 nights and head back to Amsterdam Central? Is there a direct train and how much for 2nd class?
The websites for train service in the Netherlands and Belgium only show cost for internal and domestic services.
4) Does anybody know of a good B and B near the Echternach train station. We are an elderly couple and we would like to find budget accomodation near the staion. a budget hotel would also be fine. many thanks for your help

1) The single through ticket is 37.20 Euro and it is (at least here in Hungary) valid for 2 month. I did read, the tickets to/from Luxemburg in Belgium could be valid for a shorter period, while the price is the same.
You can check it for yourself on www.jizdenka.cz (switch to English and switch to international tickets).
2) There is no direct train, I see you will need at least two changes and the last one will be by bus. You can check it for yourself on

3) Same for the Echternach->Amsterdam question. But the price depends on the route you chose.
I got 68.40 Euros going via Gouvy(Fr) - Vise(Fr), which is 80 km in Luxemburg, 104 km in Belgium and 228 km in Netherlands, but maybe you want to use a different route.
There is a good European railway map, maybe you should check out the routes there:

An interesting option could be to go through Germany. The price will be somewhat more: 74 Euro from Igel(gr) to Amsterdam via Venlo and 84.60 Euro from Igel(gr) to Amsterdam via Emmerich, add 7.60 Euro for Echternach->Igel(Gr) section in Lux. However, you can see some more cities like Trier, Koblenz, Cologne (and some bits of the Rhine valley!)
Look at the corresponding Germany map:

Local customs and events
by hydronetta
Another unique event is the “Dancing Procession” which dates back in the middle ages. This takes place annually on Whitsun Tuesday. Thousand of pilgrims, holding each other by handkerchiefs, skip and spring to the rhythm of an ancient simple tune which is played by brass and violin bands, heading to the crypt of the Basilica where Echternach’s founder is buried.
Echternach is known for its international music festival during the months of May and June featuring many world famous musicians but young artists as well. Concerts are held in the Ronamesque Basilica and in the Peter and Paul Church.
Roman villa
by hydronetta
The roman villa is a site situated in the recreational centre to the west of the town of Echternach and was excavated in 1975-6 and boasts a palace with 70 rooms, 2 baths, mosaic floors, heating systems. The site also houses the exhibition the “Life of Romans” and a roman garden
The Law Cross
by Beckhanne
The Law Cross or Colum of Justice stands on the market square, near the pedestrian shopping street. It was supposed to demonstrate abbot Willibrord's supremacy on the citizens regarding all matters of judgment. The cross was destroyed by the French revolutionary troops in 1794 and set up again in 1982 in its original place according to 18th century plans.
Wooden bridge

Across the street of the hotel we we're in there is a wooden bridge over the " Sure ".
That is the name of the river at this side.
The other bank is Germany and there the river is called the " Sauer "

Echternach is a small town at the northeast corner of Luxembourg, just a short drive on E29 from the capital. It's a good place to get away from it all -- either to relax quietly with a warm capucchino at a main street café, or take a refreshing walk on one of the many forested footpaths nearby.
Thanks for walking with us and we hope you enjoyed it.
Greetings Yolande
