Very pleasant, very convenient

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on February 16, 2013

I chose the Hotel Carlton because it was in a convenient location for my intended activities: within easy walking distance of the railway station and airport bus stop (2 minutes) and equally easy walking distance of the Vielle Ville (10 minutes).

The Quartier Gare is not the prettiest part of Luxembourg city but it is certainly not unpleasant. Nor did it feel in any way unsafe, despite the fact that there are one or two rather seedy clubs and bars in the surrounding side-streets. This is, after all, Luxembourg: 'seediness' here is nothing in comparison with many European and US cities and towns!

The Carlton is in a typical, large, turn-of-the-20th-century mansion house, with twiddly embellishments on its exterior and its 'wings' set around a small central courtyard (not accessible). It's family-owned and has rather lovely furnishings in the foyer (some nice stained-glass too), a large guest lounge complete with games (backgammon, chess etc) and a superb stone fireplace, a lift (to the 3rd floor only) and a breakfast room.

I was greeted by the smiling ?owner? (who seemed to be permanently on duty at the reception desk or in the breakfast room, and permanently smiling!) who provided me with a welcome drink of orange juice before I went up to my room.

I'd got a good deal on the hotel so wasn't expecting anything special, so I was pleased to be on the 1st floor (I'd assumed 'budget' rooms were on the 4th). The room was beautifully clean, with comfortable single bed, workdesk, hanging space, safe and a bathroom with plenty of hot water and an efficient shower. There was also a kettle and cup, but only herbal teas were provided (I hate those). The room heating was efficient...a good thing, because it was very cold when I visited....and the windows opened onto said 'courtyard'. As the room was at the back it was quiet, but the street isn't particularly busy with traffic anyway...although deliveries to the hotels, and waste collection, might create some noise if your room is at the front.

A variety of drinks were on offer from reception, from coffee to juice to beer to spirits...all at very reasonable prices, I thought. The free wifi was efficient.

Breakfast was good, served from 5-10am. Each place had orange juice, two boiled eggs, a plate of cheese slices and a plate of salami slices already laid out. Bread for toasting, bread rolls, croissants, fruit and yoghurts were available for self-service. A whole pot of good coffee (tea and chocolate also available) was brought by serving staff.

There are several bars, cafes and places to eat within a few minutes' walk of the hotel and the Vielle Ville (with all the upmarket restaurants) is only 10 minutes walk away.

All in all, a very comfortable place for a Luxembourg stay and one in a very convenient location. My fellow guests were almost all business people, as far as I could tell..hardly surprising, given Luxembourg's importance in Europe..but the hotel is just as good a base for the leisure visitor.

I booked through www.booking.com and got a very good rate; I'm sure the hotel is more expensive in season, and certainly when large conferences or exhibitions are held.

Directions: Face the railway station from the opposite side of the road and walk to the left. Rue de Strasbourg is first (or second, depending where you start from) on the left, the hotel a few yards further down on the left.

Good deal in Luxembourg

Great hotel. 80€/night for twin room including breakfast.
5min walk to train station, 15min to centre of town.
Was recently renovated (as of Oct '07) and decent size room for European hotels.
Definitely recommend.
