Travel Tips for Luxembourg

Tourist Information Office

by Imbi

Tourist Information Office is situated in the beautiful building of City Palace. Helpful staff welcomes warmly to every one (at least me) and they speak very good English. You can get city map for free and a guide for Euro 1. There are also other information available in the office.

Grund

by ATLC

This whole area is known as 'Grund' (that must translate to Ground').
The long building (under the cranes) in the background used to be a hospital with 3 meter thick walls to protect against cannonball fire. It is nowadays the national archive.

The language

by ATLC

The language of Luxembourg is Luxembourgish. A mix of French, Dutch, German.
The guide told us it is not a written language. I suppose (but did not see) there are writings in Luxembourgish but people do not correspond in it.

For a Dutch person the sounds are familiar, you're almost waiting to understand what people are saying but you simply can't!
The official language is French but the newspapers are in German!

by nighthawk

The Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk (our lady) became cathedral in 1870, functioning as a parish church.
The looks of the city are also typical because of the three sharp pointed towers of this church.
The northern entrance, sculptured in the years between 1613 and 1615, is the masterpiece of Daniel Muller.
The church used to belong to a Jesuit College. First stone was laid on May 7th, 1613. The architect of this flamboyant gothic church is a Belgian Jesuit named Jean de Block.

Trip to Echternach

by HORSCHECK

Another side trip by car led us to Echternach, which is located about 35 km northeast of Luxembourg-City, just at the border to Germany.

It is the oldest town in Luxembourg and therefore has some historic sights to offer. Among them is the Abbey of Echternach whose history dates back to the 7th century.

The other church worth seeing in town is the parish church of St. Peter and Paul.

Another highlight of Echternach is its market square which is surrounded by ancient buildings like the Gothic Old Town Hall (15th century).
