More about Canifor Hotel
Overbooked and no hot water
I and my boyfriend have just come back from Canifor hotel - Malta. We stayed in the hotel for 7 nights. When we arrived and got our registration forms completed. We were told from the receptionist, due to the computer problem, they overbooked. We were then allocated into their Self catering apartment Cardor hotel for our first night. We were told that it's bigger and the difference would have just been the room has self catering facilities. Even though we were not happy about it, we had no choice as they insisted they overbooked and we were both exhausted by the flight journey. We were told that someone would have come to reception to direct us to Cardor hotel before we agreed to stay there for a night. In the end, we had to make our own way, according to the receptionist confusing brief directions. When we arrived Cardor hotel, we were actually allocated to the top floor and the room was small, beddings were smelly and it seemed no one cleaned the room and there was no water!
We then went back to the reception in Canifor hotel asking for swap and the promise that we were able to move back to that hotel next day. We were then told that we were able to move back to the hotel at 9:30am next day. Therefore we went to the reception next day morning. We were told that the room for us was not yet ready until afternoon so we had to check out at Cardor hotel with our luggauges and brought these over to reception awaiting for the room! What a time wasting!
Finally we got our room in so-called 4 star hotel (that was told by tour operator), In my opinions, I will only give 2 and half star the max. There were no hot water at night time. We have reported to the hotel twice but got no reply back from them. There was so called air conditioning but I was seriouly in doubt if it's working. We have been waken up after midnight because it was so hot even though we tried to put the air-cond to the lowest. It's still makes no different at all! I am definitely not recommended this hotel!
Honest review - March 2007
Just returned from Canifor Hotel.
Room was of a three star standard but always scrupulously clean.
Food was adequate, bland, breakfast not very good, lunch poor, but evening meal usually reasonably acceptable. Carverys were frequent and enjoyable. Deserts of a 2 star standard.
Hotel entertainment suitable for 60 plus age range. Hotel facilities very 2 star, lack of louge space, nothing to do when weather inclement. Nothing for children at all.
We will not be returning to this hotel. All staff were helpful and tried to make things enjoyable.
not as bad as i thought
Just arrived back from a week staying at the Canifor hotel, we were a bit dubtious about staying there after reading all the bad reviews, but we were made to feel very welcome as soon as we arrived. Our room was 312 overlooking the swimming pool, and yes there is a building site next door, but it was'nt that bad and we didnt go on holiday to stay in our room all day so the noise did not affect us. The breakfast was plentiful, the only gripe was that somedays the coffee took ages to be poured and we'd almost finished breakfast before it arrived. We had booked a double room, but as in most European countries we had two singles pushed together, my single was fine, but my hubby said that his was not so comfortable (lucky me!!!), i did ask the housekeeper for another pillow and was delivered to my room within 5 mins. We only stayed B&B so ate out at night, mostly at the Great Wall chinese resturant where a three course set meal would set you back L3 50c, we then went to Simons Bar (Elvis Tribute Bar)about 30 yards from hotel for some great nightly entertainment. WE had a great time in Malta and would without a doubt stay at the Canifor again.
great family holiday
The Canifor hotel was great value for money we were all inclusive and it was worth every penny
The pool was a salt water pool and alittle small , but my sons still spend lots of time in there
The room was great 214 first floor over looking the pool very clean and the air con was super keeping the room very cool at night this was are second visit to the canifor , and this year it was even better some small improvements like huge screen tv in the main bar where you could see all the sports live , and on a night time the put a dvd on which the children enjoyed why me and the wife could have a drink or two , three who was counting ??
please hire a car we did for three day in three day we had a day in the water park £20 famliy pass great fun , and only 5 minutes from the canifor in car
Valeta market was also very good we even drove to a festa where we watched the fire works the best we had ever seen over ONE hour of huge fire works filled the night sky
popeye village another winner for the children i also found it very good. Malta we will see you very soon thanks to the canifor staff for a super stay the bar man by the pool ( Clifton ) was super very good with the children , i'm sure my wife had her eye on him ??!!
The Woodward Famliy
Hotel was nice enough
we stayed in the canifor before and returned so that must tell you something. We have travelled to Malta many many times we just love the country, anyone complaining about the Canifor should stay in some of the dives we have been too, then they would appreciate what this hotel has to offer. May I remind people Malta is still regarded as third world by some countries and when people say to you you either love it or loath it they are most probably right, it can be an aquired taste, but if you like the place you generally love it and return year in year out, personally I love the island and it's people and will return to the canifor in the near future.
Not as bad as expected
Having had experience of Malta’s hotel grading system, we knew not to expect a real 4 star hotel and hoped for the best where some of the negative reviews were concerned. Having been regular visitors to Malta for many years this was our first trip in 8 years and never having stayed at Canifor.
We arrived for a one week stay very late as flight delayed and transfer from airport held up so checking in at 02.30, only us so very quick and night porter welcoming. Despite tiredness I gave the room the check we give everywhere, sheets and pillows checked along with bathroom, all spotless. The room was for people with mobility difficulties as specifically requested a walk in shower to accommodate my husband’s needs and I think an add on in recent times. It did us but was very small and would in no way have accommodated a wheelchair. The room was clean, as was bathroom. Sheets were changed in the week and towels changed daily. We had no tv, which does not matter to us, or radio, which we would have used, the small fridge was free and empty so handy for our own bottled water. The balcony was huge, bigger than the room, had view of the street and out to the bay. Storage was limited, two small drawers, the shelf in wardrobe was broken and only 4 hangers. We asked rep and reception with no result, then asked maid who produced lots of hangers within 10 minutes, so problem solved.
The rest of the hotel, quite spacious and airy. Main bar was fine, the entertainment mixed, one act quite lively getting everyone dancing, two others dire. Outdoor terrace and pool, weather only allowed a couple of days likely to be out there and the building work at the adjacent block made it not ideal. Unusually did not use indoor pool.
So, the dining room, we were half board. Staff were friendly did not experience anyone who was not. Breakfasts, usual buffet but not the best, no fruit but of course that is the fault off those who took food out of dining room for later, hotels have wised up. All said about the toaster is true, you have it part toasted or burnt. Not all typical English breakfast items were available each day, so one day sausages, the next bacon. Fried eggs, fried bread and beans always available, occasional boiled eggs and only once scrambled. Some cheese and ham, and some pastries, but not best quality. Evening meals; soups good, salad buffet available but not always appetising, mains often a joint carved to order, a fish choice but not proper fresh fish and something else. Vegetarian dishes had to be ordered in advance which I eventually caught on to, were ok. Some meals were truly awful, some better. To us the food was not good, but we saw people with their plates piled up so one mans meat etc.
Overall, it was not as bad as I feared from other reviews; cleanliness was my main concern and had no problems on this score. The food was not our cup of tea may suit others. As with all Maltese the staff were friendly, and we thought wine and drinks prices reasonable. Its location was handy and central for Qwara where we always stayed. The resort had not changed much; lots of good walks, on downside you still have to watch where you put your feet, and the time share touts are a pain. If you don’t stop they are rude, if you do they accuse you of wasting their time as you have no intention of going anywhere. On plus side, great views, nooks and crannies to explore, good eating and drinking stops and friendly locals. Agree with others on Simon’s Elvis bar, good entertainment and friendly people, also liked Tuckers. Red Lion very quiet and lack of atmosphere and sadly our old favourite Sun City was closed for winter.
Pleased to have seen Malta again, would not stop at Canifor again but am aware the hotels there are much of a muchness.
lovely hotel on lovely island
very impressed with this hotel as we got very good deal. Clean and tidy with very pleasant staff. reception always polite and helpfull. could do with another toaster for breakfast thats only problem. Good location near lots of night life and short stroll to beach. as it was january it was mostly older people but not a problem. had several good nights in the elvis tribute bar just around the corner as the entertainment in hotel was good but mainly aimed at the oldies. Bus station just around corner and that took you all over the island for next to nothing also very good casino opposite bus station, also visited gozo, which was like going back in time. we took a taxi tour of island but advise negotiating your price first as the taxis all pounce on you as soon as you get off ferry, will return
We went just for the night, wish we hadn't bothered. We had family over for the week and thought we would give them a tast of our sister
Island. The only saving grace were the two barmen, they were great with a good sense of humour. The food was ok at best. We had two rooms, both were small and both had mould in the bathroom, not just a little a lot. We couldn't even see in the bathroom mirror it was so badly damaged.
The entertainment could only be discribed as for the over 90ies that was in both entertainment areas, the barmen asked if they could come out with our family it was that bad (I hope they get paid well to suffer it.)
We put on a brave face and decided to venture out, after taking a hot shower, big mistake hot water as cold as the cold water, phone reception very unhelpful basically implied we were lying, went to reception and asked about it again and told they had a problem
(they think) no sorry nothing. Do your self a fovour stay somewhere else!
Beware they are overbooked
Got to the hotell ate as flight was delayed only to be told that we could have our hotel room tomorrow and would have to spend a night in the car door apts. Its discusting , they are offering guests All I nclusive to move to these shoddy , smelly apts as they always overbook the hotel.Beware do not bother!!
DONT DO IT!!!!!!!!!
4*, No way, even 1* is being kind, i booked last minute as i had business to do in Bugibba, so at first was grateful to get a bed. I didnt realise ankle biting bed bugs came free, along with Bin collection at 6am, workman and their hammers from 7am, lack of bar staff at all times, female receptionists with attitude,oh and not forgetting the chinese water torture i had the pleasure of the night the bathroom ceiling fell down due to leaks from the upstairs toilet. Never ask for an alarm call, it wont happen, I almost lost out on contracts due to not having an alarm call i booked, 2 days running! dont expect a sunbed as guests are allowed to let their towels sunbathe alday whilst they go on day trips. i must add also, i witnessed many people that thought they were staying there get turned away and sent elsewhere due to severe over booking. If anyone has any sense and you read this before you book, try to get anywhere else but here.(it is owned by the brother of the Bella Vista hotel). although the first impressions of this hotel are good, beauty is skin deep, remember this.
