I will be traveling to Malta in May

by dmayer43

I will be traveling to Malta in May with some friends of mine. They will be staying at the Benard hotel in St. Julians, but I have heard and read bad things about that place. My question is, is there another hotel close to the Benard that is of better quality. Any help or in-sight would be great appreciated.

Honestly, I'd say scrap the hotel idea, and just get a short term apartment. You can get a fully furnished apartment with full kitchen, air conditioning, cable TV, etc. for around 12 Lm per night.

Drop me a PM if you need some help.

hmmm....well it depends on what type of holiday you are looking for. Are you planning to party all night every night? Or are you looking for a relaxing holiday, taking in the sites during the day and getting a good rest a nite?

If the latter is the case then I would suggest a different hotel. The reason I say this is because Bernard Hotel is right in the clubbing area. If you are on the side you can actually see all the bars and discos through your window.... and obviously hear the music till the early hours of the morning!

This hotel tends to be used to cater for students who come here to learn english in the summer... hence it is easy for them to go out and party and get back to their hotel without worrying about catching taxis.

There are plenty of hotels in that area but obviously it depends on your budget. The majority are 4/5 star hotels such as intercontinental / radisson / westin, etc You can also find 3 stars or less but obviously you pay for what you get.

Have you tried searching for hotels in sliema? It is still close to St. Julians/Paceville but at least you can be assured a good night's sleep at night...... obviously this depends as i said before on the type of holiday you are looking for.

With hotels you will get what you pay for. If you go cheap, you wll get a cheap hotel.

I agree with ORI and RABTI. If you want a quiet area, avoid accomodation in the st julians/paceville area.

Getting a visa for Malta, more locations!

by danielson81

This might not be of help for some people, but it might help some!

I think the Maltese government has signed agreements with the Austrian and Italian governments to allow people from outside the EU, USA, Canada, Aus, NZ etc to apply for visas at their embassies where Malta has no embassy or High Commission.

This document explains where to go:

RELIGION CUSTOM - GOOD FRIDAY PROCESSION

by ROCKARIA

The Maltese are in the majority roman catholics and on Good Friday they have a fully fledged procession complete with all statues representing every stage that Jesus went through on his way to the cross.
This procession is very well organised in various towns all over the Island of Malta and Gozo.
This procession on Good Friday is a "must see" for those visitors who are in Malta in the month of March. I have never seen any thing like it in its scale any where else in the world....there is every detail complete with real roman soldiers, captains, shepards, lambs,Barabas,Pilatus and a big number of men dressed all in white robes with head covered carrying large chains attached to their feet which they have to drag through the streets of their village as a sign of repentance.
Its an experience to watch and i feel also honoured to take part in carrying one of the stage statues of the flogging..............maybe its my ticket to heaven!!

Dingli Cliffs - wow

by reenby

To get to the cliffs you have to catch a bus to Rabat, then follow a 2km pathway through lovely Buskett Gardens to reach Dingli cliffs - the highest point on the island.

Walk along the cliff so high above the sea and feel the wind as it sweeps over. The cliffs are probaby caused by Africa scrunching up to Europe. It has been suggested that this is where Atlantis dropped off into the sea - and who knows.

There are no cafes etc so take your own eats. When you have had enough of the solitude and views walk back down the little hill to the town and catch the bus at the church.

Open air simple food

by ray_d about Il-Forn

A late-night restaurant of eclectic tastes.
Not particularly excellent but enjoyable enough and the food is as natural as you can get.
Cheap as chips and reminds me of my student days, only now it is Yuppy country. A room is given over to an Art gallery.
I shall not comment on the displayed art.
The place is easy to miss. It is a normal house which once was an oven. So the name: Il-Forn (The Oven).
I would have enjoyed it more if the smell from the Pigeon Avery on the adjoining roof did not mix smells with my food and service was not confined to only 1 waiter and 1 waitress. I hope the cook was not the artist.
8/10 for the food and the location. Ftira: a flat, stiff bread filled with everything under God's sun.
