Aparthotel San Anton: Avoid San Anton!
We wanted a cheap 1 week break in Malta. Thus our expectations of our accomodation were not too high. Aparthotel San Anton managed to even go below this.
In no particular order:
> Reception Staff: rude, unhelpful, uncommunicative;
> Room: dirty, worn out:
> Cleaning Service: Didn't changes sheets, towels, clean room;
> Food: Adequate, but only just, very limited choice of food;
> Pool: over-chlorinated with cloudy water (cannot see your own feet when standing in water):
> Hotel Management: actually saw a duty manager hide from other irate customers;
> Bar staff - slow service.
All this added up to a break that was anything but relaxing. I would no receommend this hotel to my worse enemy.
Unique Quality: Unique Qualities? Well it is not the charm of the place. The only thing that I can say in it's favour is that the cleaners kept the brass hand-rail outside the hotel clean and polished!
Every plant pot had a wealth of dog-ends and other rubbish in them. Canopies by the pool were all torn and/or broken.

Malta great hotel
Stayed for a week at the Maritim Antonine Hotel and Spa Malta in July 2007, would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone. We had a room overlooking the ground floor pool, the rooms were cleaned on a daily basis and we had fresh towels every day. Bedrooms, large with sat. tv. mini bar, tea/coffee making facilities, settee, chairs, coffee tables etc. The breakfast in the hotel was really good with lots of choice. Staff, polite, friendly and very helpful. Would highly recommend the 'Arches' restaurant, across the road from the hotel, as they say ' I have eaten in London, New York, Paris and Rome' among many other places but their food was as good as any I have had on my travels, must dress, smart/casual, no shorts etc. if you only dine out once make this place a must. Was not too impressed with the pizza place attached to the hotel but others seemed to enjoy the food. Wouls stay at this hotel again, if visiting Malta.

Ambassador Hotel, Xemxija: The Ambassador Hotel
It's a budget hotel, and you get what you pay for. It's fairly basic, the rooms are fairly small and some of the amenities either don't work or aren't available. It also looks like a blue and yellow sandcastle and is slightly out of the way on its own.
However, the view is fantastic (see photo) - try and get a sea view room if you can. The air con works a little too well - freezing in the morning! The staff are very nice and the owners' son is very cheeky but quite sweet. We went at the end of August 06 for a week, and it wasn't crowded at all. The most we saw of other people was when we left! The pool is small, but there rarely seemed to be anyone around it. The downside for me was that it was saltwater, which isn't my cup of tea. We had B&B board, and the breakfast was quite basic, but had everything that we wanted (cereal/toast/juice/coffee/bread&butter etc). The breakfast room was nice and big and breakfast was available for a few hours, so again it was never crowded. Full and half board is available as well.
It's a short walk down to the bus stop (5 mins max) which is nice in the summer sun, by the harbour. The buses are fairly frequent, but the best thing to do is to go into Valletta or Bugibba if you can, and then out again, as they are far more extensive and will get you where you want to go.
It's close to: Golden Bay, the Popeye Village, Bugibba, St Paul's Bay, Mellieha, the ferry port to Gozo. It's also very easy to get to Valletta, and consequently anywhere else on the island.

Pergola Club Hotel & Spa: Best value for money in Malta!
We have stayed at the Pergola Hotel in the first week of April and I must comment that the stay exceeded by far what we expected. We booked because the Hotel had good prices on Expedia and we thought we'd give it a shot. It turned out to be beautiful...the weather helped the stay too!
Unique Quality: The Hotel is located on a hill and the view is truly amazing. I am an artist and have painted the panorama from my balcony. The rooms were very spacious and newly refurbished. Do NOT expect 5 star standard because it is a 4-Star Hotel!!!!! Cleanliness is superb, the housekeeper (a very friendly lady) has been working there for a long time (20 years) That is surprising becuase the place does not look 20 years old. We stayed in a 1-bedroom apartment and the bedroom was a bit small and no window but the lounge area made up for it. The apartment even had a big kitchen with a HUGE fridge (even bigger than the one we got at home!) and very well equipped. The front door looked a bit shabby but who cares about the door as long as it's sturdy!
We tried the food for a couple of time but most of the times we were eating out. There are plenty of good restaurants around. TIP : Ask the receptionists to recommend restaurants becuase most of the staff is from the village and know the area very well.
We had a maintenance issue with the balcony door but it was sorted immediately. The staff amongst whom, Charmaine are truly friendly and efficient.
I can't say it was a perfect holiday but a truly enjoyable one... and Malta is lovely if you make the most of it!
PS. They also had a spa which we didn't try but was mentioned positevely by other guests

Corinthian St Gorg: Excellent Hotel
Stayed for 3 days on a business trip and would recommend this for a holiday. The breakfact buffet was superb with any option available.
Unique Quality: Excellently located hotel overlooking the Bay of St Gorg and only 5 mins walk to the nightlife Paceville and the restuarant area of St Julians. Facilities were superb with 3 out door swinmming pools and one indoor which is part of a spa are complete with sauna and jacquzzi.

Santa Maria Appartments: Warning!
These appartments are not as most of the website describes. The photo of the bay is stunning but be aware that you are not as close to the bay as the information leads you to believe.
These appartments are not on a complex, the are in the basement/lower level of a house, in a residential area.
They are cold & damp and from the smell of mould coming from under the sink, I will asume that are not very popular.
Would not reccommend as I believe they are a fire hazzard, all windows have bars and you have no escape if you are sleeping. The main door to the appartment is in the kitchen; which you have to walk through to get to the bedroom and bathroom.
Unique Quality: They have a patio area, the pool was dirty and a small BBQ area.
The appartment was not as expected, the description '1 bedroom appartment' actually meant a bedroom and kitchen, no living/sitting room.
No basic essentials only salt & pepper and no offer to assist considering my flight was late on a sunday afternoon when all shops were closed.
I have used the website to rent appartments on other trips, this was property number 2883 on the site.

Hotel Serena Beach Club: Watch the surcharges - probably best to pay cash
Having seen reviews elsewhere about overcharging via credit card, we'd decided to pay cash & expected to pay about 45 LM surcharges (On top of already paying accommodation & booking fees). So when we arrived, it was shocking to be asked to pay 130LM. This was, from memory, 48LM utility fee, 42LM (6LM a day) maid service, 30LM for parking and 10LM deposit for using the TV.
The owner Joe also tried to pressure us into taking half board (we were self catering) for 30% off but he wouldn't say how much (he offered 50% off to another British couple but didn't give them a figure either). He also said that Visa give him a special exchange rate that was 30% better than usual, in order to try to get our card details. On checking out we got a handwritten receipt which was blank.
The hotel itself is set into the hillside. The lowest floor (-1) & extension are under construction, so the indoor pool, gym etc don't exist. The reception on floor 0 (below ground level at the rear) was awful - paper hanging off the walls, filthy carpet, & the whole floor smelt of damp (complete with stalactites on the ceilings).
Only a few rooms have views, due to other buildings being in the way. There is airconditioning in the bedroom which has to be left on 24/7 as you can't touch the controls. The sheets were ancient & too small for the bed so they'd ping off in the night. The bedroom and bathroom windows open out onto internal shafts which are good at carrying noise. Ours opened out by the rooftop restaurant so the evening cabaret made the rooms uninhabitable.
For nearly £10 a day the maid would make the bed, empty the bin, change the towels and spray air freshener. We had to complain to get any cleaning done so for the day after that, the surfaces were wiped.
I woldn't return to the Serena due to the worry over charges and level of service.
Unique Quality: The hotel has a lovely aspect from the top floors and the sunroof is one of the only places to sunbathe in Xlendi. The rooftop pool is nice if chemically.
Xlendi itself is a fantasic, quiet resort. There is good swimming, lovely scenery and a good selection of local restaurants, including Il-Tmun, Il-Terrazzo and St Patrick hotel. The snorkelling and sightseeing tours offered by Ted's boat trips were great fun and good value for money.

Tal Fanal Farmhouses: Accomodation in Gozo Farmhouses
The facilities offers self catering and have a rustic design style with fantastic views of the island. These Farmhouses are mostly placed in rural area but as Gozo is small it is conveniently only 15 mins drive to everywhere by car.
