More about Riviera Resort Hotel

Malta's best Hotel!!!!

by silvia-m.b about The Barcelo Riviera Resort & Spa

The hotel is one of the best in the island for its facilities. I love their calm ambience, next to Gozo's ferry and in front of Comino's Island. Great views, jaccuzzi and pools! Great food too!

A bit disappointing

by TripAdvisor Member tillerbar

I visited this hotel as it is listed as a spa resort, having first arrived i got excited as the location overlooking the sea seemed great. At first glance the spa looked good but having had a treatments and visting the I found it very disappointing indeed. The gym is unmanaged and the treatment rooms do not have a relaxing feel and paint work is chipping and overall looks very tired. I was having a massage and could hear the phone ringing and reception girls talking.
The food at Solana was also not good on the day we tried it but on the second attempt it got a little better, I think it depends which chef is on duty.

Ok hotel in a remote position

by TripAdvisor Member Kat35

Stayed at this hotel for 1 week over Easter 2007. The position of the hotel is remote - a hire car is essential. Buses are ok but they run until 21.00 in the evening, a taxi will cost 5MLA from Mellieha.
First impressions were good, staff were friendly & helpful, the 2 bedroomed appartment was nice with a good sized kitchen/living room. Balcony was small, but had a nice view over the outside pools. On the down side the lift could be heard all through the day & night.
The general facilities are ok, although I'm not sure that the 4* rating is appropriate. The indoor pool was warm, the jacuzzi & hydrotherapy pool didn't work properly. The equipment in the gym was good, the running & cycles are fine but beware of the step machine. There are a good selection of free weights & machines.
I was excited to use the spa but unfortunately it was expensive for the services provided. They don't even had a proper massage bed so you end up with a crick in your neck! As anyone can imagine this does not aid relaxation.

many pros only two cons.

by TripAdvisor Member lisajUk

The hotel is 3km from Mellieha Bay and a further 3km up hill to the town. Buses run every few minutes as the complex is close to the Gozo Ferry port. They do stop mid evening but hotel can organise taxis on request at any time and free shuttles run to the Casino nightly.

The views of Comino and Gozo are unrivaled and the hotel has improved greatly.

The Spa has an indoor pool, hair saloon, full treatments and great gym. I never saw more than five people between them all.

There are a further two pools outdoors which keeps kids and adults apart. There is a pool bar here and also one on the private beech.

All the restaurants serve varied and reasonable food in a timely and friendly fashion.

The cons are that the walk into the town is very dangerous with little pavement and street lighting and is very steep.

The second is the majority of staff seemed to have a chip on their shoulder. This was not everyone and some were excellent. The younger guys working there need some help in understanding the importance of making a holiday a relaxing time for the guests and not a battle to get attention, helpful advice or good service.

I would go again but would be prepared to be slightly pushier to get the help I needed.

Great Stay!

by TripAdvisor Member MaltaCrazy

Thank god I did not take some reviews seriously. Our stay was great. We had a magnificent view of comino and gozo from our room.
The hotel was clean and food was very good. Service was good too. We dined on the bistro terrace and on several occasions at Hola Beach next to the hotel. We wanted a relaxing stay, and that's what we got. We spent some time by the pool, but most of the time was spent at Hola Beach. We just loved this place. Apparently it is still not well known with tourists, so we enjoyed the chillout music, food and cocktails during daytime and at night. It's great for couples for a romantic getaway or just to relax and chillout. They also offer wooden beds with mattresses and sheets and pillows. You can also rent out a four poster bed for the day.... The people that manage this beach are really friendly and accommodating. Can't wait to go there again!!!

A Great Stay!

We booked this hotel without checking the reviews on Trip Advisor first so I was a little bit worried before we went but fortunately my worries were unfounded and we had a great two weeks at the Barcelo Riviera hotel.

Room: We booked a room with a sea-view and it was definitely worth the extra money. Whenever the pool area got too hot or too busy or we just wanted to eat our lunch in our room we could just go up to our room and onto our balcony and we had a view of the pool, the sea and the island of Comino. I don’t think our room would have been as attractive an option if we only had scorched fields and a road to look out onto. The TV only had two English language channels which were Sky News and BBC News 24 (BBC News regularly went off) but every night there were two movies on one of which was usually in English and the other in French or German although on at least two occasions both films were in German. The balcony was fantastic and has a couple of chairs and table on it so you could easily spend whole days sunbathing from your room.

Location: You step out of the hotel and within 30 seconds walk you have a bus stop as well as the ferry over to the Blue Lagoon so even though you’re pretty much in the middle of nowhere its easy enough to get around. We wanted a hotel in a peaceful area and that’s definitely what we got.

Food: The buffet breakfast and the evening buffet meal were varied and of a good quality. We also ate at the Bistro and found that to be nice as well. For lunch we would go to the pool bar for a sandwich which was simple but always good. The pool bar sells sandwiches, fruit salads, crisps and doughnuts as well as a wide variety of drinks and ice creams.

Facilities: My girlfriend made more use of the spa then me and thought it was great and she also went to the aqua aerobics and loved it. There are two computers in the hotel lobby for guests to access t’internet. Three pools (two outside, one inside)

Staff: The staff were friendly enough but I witnessed occasions when they had to put up with incredibly rude hotel guests so its no wonder they’re occasionally a little stand offish.

Problems: Whilst we were there we had three power cuts (one of which lasted 14 hours), a fire alarm went off so we went straight to reception and were told it was a false alarm so we returned to our room but unfortunately the deafening alarm rang out for over an hour late into the night and the air conditioning blows hot most of the time. Also the lifts were out of order a lot of the time.

Main suggestion: Get down to the Bistro between 10 and 12 to buy cheap water! We didn’t know about this until well into our second week having already spent a fortune on the expensive water from the pool bar. No information about this is given in the room and it was by chance we found this information out.

The hotel gets a lot busier at the weekend as the Maltese come to use the facilities so the pool area got a bit crowded but the rest of the time you had the pool area pretty much to yourself but this was in mid-June.

Overall it was good. We’d stay again.
