More about San Antonio Hotel & Spa Malta
We will be back
Stayed here again with my wife and daughter in August 2006, after first going in February 2006. It was, as you would expect in the high of summer, very busy with mainly French and Italians. But, the hotel and it's staff did not let us down it was superb. We stayed half board and could not fault the food with a new menu each evening.
Malta has come on leaps and bounds over the last few years and this hotel is an ideal location to stay and explore the island. The bus station is less than 200 yards from the front door. Don't miss a trip to Gozo and the capital Valletta.
Lovely hotel, lovely people and a lovely island......what more could you want.
very disappointing 4 star hotel
We had originally booked the two room suite with ocean view but within 2 hours after check-in we voluntarily downgraded ourselves to a standard double room because: a) already at the end of the corridor, where the suite was located, but even more in the suite there was a humid, stale smell in the air which could not be cleansed by turning the aircon on full power or opening the t wo balcony doors b) the suite consisted of two rooms, not very cosy and seemed more like a large two room standard room but with no higher standard which one would expect in a suite. The second room contained a bed sofa, a small table, two chairs and a small TV (watching TV from the sofa would have been impossible, and sitting in a regular chair all evening to watch TV ,not a whole lot of fun) and in general only large but not cozy. positive: a very large balcony.
We took a look at a regular room and decided to change as the air seemed much better. Within a day we noticed that the airconditioning did not work at all. It blew air, but no matter into which direction one turned the knob, the air did not get cooler and was still very humid.
Our sea view room als had a view of the hotel pool construction site: during our stay the hotel was first a grey concrete hole and by the end of the week at least the hole had been painted blue but there was no water in it.
Appliances and tiles in the bathroom that had been cracked or loosened from the wall were only placed back but not mended properly as one could expect from a international 4 star hotel. I guess cockroaches on the floor during the night one can´t avoid in a warm country like Malta; therefore the tip: turn on the light and put on slippers when visiting the bathroom at night.
Breakfast buffet was ok, but not very exciting or appealing (food and decoration); it does not suit all international tastes as it offered e.g. only 2 very cheap choices of jam and only a very limited choice of ham, salamis, etc. It was also very noisy during breakfast, but that´s not the hotel´s fault.
All in all we can only say that the pictures from the homepage outside and inside must have been taken when the hotel was new. Cleanliness is not the highest priority (corridors could be vacuumed more often, the light ceiling in the elevators should be cleaned by rmoving about 20 to 30 dead bugs). Also small things in public areas should be attended to more often like immediately removing things that break, completing mosaics or tiles again once broken. We will definitely not return to this hotel and were very disappointed with this Mercure 4 star hotel standard.
oct 24 to 31st. had a fab holiday.rooms were very clean . food was wonderful and all staff very friendly- nothing wrong with the pool at all not sure why prev report says there was?had free upgrade to breakfast as there were no kitchen facilities in the room which was a bonus. had large balcony with jacuzzi. 2 bathrooms in 1 bedroomed apartment. maid came in everyday and cleaned and tidied - never saw a cockroach!!would definitely go to this hotel again.
Lovely hotel and resort
Me and my partner had a lovely week at this hotel. Not sure the hotel lives up to the 4 stars as quite basic but very clean and certainly would return. Quiet at night within the resort if your looking for a big night out but very relaxing and many bars and restaurants to choose from.
Pool area lovely and again very clean we went bed and breakfast not sure about the food in the evenings but the breakfast had a fair choice.
Would return to the hotel and resort.
A real chill-out place to stay
Lovely hotel in a great location. Smashing views of the bay from my balcony, but the sun only hits the east corner of the building, so most are in the shade all day, but the views more than make up for it. I found all the staff very friendly and always willing to help you. There was entertainment most nights in the lobby bar. I took a tip from a previous tripadvisor review, and purchased tickets for dinner on 3 nights at Lr4.25 per night. The buffet meals had so many choices, and all nicely cooked, there was a chef cooking either meat or fish steaks every evening, and the veal stew, wow. The breakfasts were also buffet, again plenty of choices, and the pancakes and fried eggs were cooked as you waited. The indoor pool area and gym also had saunas and a jacuzzi, which was great! I would go again.
If you like gambling, the hotel is next door to the Casino, but remember to take your passport with you to register with them. The only 'blot' was the ICE 'timeshare' people in the lobby, as some of the suites on the 5th floor could be 'purchased', and their people were on every street corner outside the hotel.
After seeing one or two of the reviews I was a little concerned, but I thought Accor hotels are usually good and went ahead and booked. I'm glad I did. For £30 (20 maltese lira) a night we had a large double room with settee, large bathroom, balcony with table and chairs overlooking the pool. Also included was the very good buffet breakfast. This is all you can eat with a vast selection - OK there's only one sort of jam, marmalade and honey, but who needs to be picky for this price! It was a litlte noisy on some days at breakfast, but there was always plenty of room. I suppose during the summer it could become very busy. We also bought the dinner upgrade which included the glass of wine (for two people this meant half a bottle of wine). The selection was very good, large selection of salad and vegetables - no chips whilst we were there!!
Our room was clean and we had no problem moving the settee so we could watch the tv. In fact our cleaner left us a note to say this was OK and she moved even more of the furniture to make it more comfortable! Certainly no sign of cockroaches, only saw one ant.
Like a previous reviewer the only blot was the timeshare mob!
Hotel made the holiday
Went to Malta years ago and stayed in a 3 star hotel - it was awful. Was reluctant to go back but this hotel made the hoiday this time aroud - no faults at all superb! Food was amazing!!!
Stayed here in Feb 2007, room was good had sea view twin beds and good room service!..Hotel staff were very very helpful nothing was to much trouble, Hired a car but should have just used the bus service you only pay 23cents to go anywhere on the island its fun and clean..The people of Malta are excellent and really friendly..The only bad point was the time share reps who stand on the corner outside the hotel but just tell them to do one! and they leave you alone for the rest of the week..lol..The room we had was 227 well away from the lifts and as stated nice views with the sun as well on the balcony.
This is one of the best hotels in Malta.
We stayed there for a week (7 nights) and enjoyed every minute of our stay.
Check in was a breeze, and we went to our room. Although room was not facing the sea, it still had a nice view. Room was very large, bed comfortable and very very clean. Bathroom was very clean.
We stayed there on half board basis.
I must say that the hotel is very crowded on weekends, and you could feel it when going into the restaurant....
Breakfast was spectacular! loads of food and very fresh. Dinner changes every night - different country every day. Amazing!
We rented a car, so it was great for us to have a parking under the hotel (for free).
The area of the hotel is wonderful: it is very pleasent during the day, and during the night it is very "live" - there are plenty of restaurants and pubs around, so you only have to choose.
All in all, a superb hotel and a wonderful experience. Malta is a unique and amazing country!
We will be back.
My partner and I stayed at this hotel from the 15th Feb 2007 - 25 Feb 2007 and it is not a four star hotel. We have stayed in many hotels on Malta before usually in Melliha Bay, the grand however isn't one we would return to and were pleased to leave.
Firstly the grand isn't in St Pauls at all it's in Buggeba which is a very busy and noisy resort full of pubs and clubs, so busy that we were afraid to take our car out on sat night because quite litterally there is no place to park after eight pm untill the early hours. The hotel is very noisy particularly at weekends when it's invaded by locals who stay friday through sunday and the whole hotel just grinds to a halt - lousy food, long queue's for dinner as the restarant manager has to tick each person off a register before you may enter the dining room (worse than school).
The food on Malta isn't the best we know but at the Grand it's poor even by Maltese standards with poor quality our main complaint and very poor levels of service from overwhelmed staff.
The hotel is clean however and we would agree that reception staff are very helpfull. One further comment if you like a firm bed take your own.
