More about Selmun Palace Hotel Mellieha

Selmun Palace 1

by Angelinka

Selmun Palace was built around the 18th century Selmun Palace. This palace was designed by the famous architect Domenico Cachia. The palace is a landmark of the village of Selmun and is the largest of all such towers built by the Knights of the Order of St John.

Nice garden of Selmun palace

by Angelinka

I had a nice walk across this garden with Pierre. We were laughing and saying that he was the king of the castle with his queen. It was easy to feel like this since this gardens’ atmosphere takes you back to the past.

Tombs.....

by leics

On one of my maps, I saw a handwritten squiggle: 'rock tombs'. So I had to investigate.

Not signed properly, tucked away, but pre-Christian or perhaps very early Christian (around 0 -100 CE, maybe). Rock tombs, hollowed out from the hillside, set in a small area of limestone pavement and now largely overgrown. Worth finding, and pondering what Malta was actually like when they were carved.

So: walk to the top of the village and get to the roundabout. Take the road to the left by the stone hut (it's signed to Selmun palace and is called Triq Selmun). Walk along it on the hillside (views are good) but keep an eye open for a small, white sign on your left just before a track. This is where the tombs are; you'll have to find them in the foliage. It'll be worth it though; you'll have seen something very ancient that the vast majority of people have ignored.

Selmun

by dowdow

Enjoy a walk around the beautiful countryside of Selmun.

This beautiful baroque-styled palace was a summer residence for the wealthy nobles in the 16th and 17th century and it is very similar to the Verdala Palace in Buskett, Malta. This palace also had a chapel, dedicated to Our Lady of Ransom and some time ago, another chapel was built about 300 metres away from its original location. In this chapel there is a painting of Antoine de Favray, which was originally in the chapel in the Selmun Palace.

During the Second World War, a British Fort (Fort Campbell) was built just about 1km away from the Selmun Palace. There are still the ruins of this fort.

Just behind the palace there is a hotel.

Well if you would like to go back to the past you can also sleep in this palace. Selmun palace has been incorporated into an adjacent hotel.

Selmun hotel is an old classic hotel located in an old palace, However, it was acquired lately by the accor hotels networks so no guarantee that the quality is still the same.

by arthurp8

Ok managed to narrow my choices...either the Wardija Hilltop village, or the Barcelo Riviera Resort...
Has anyone any advice on either of these, or alternatively somewhere else they could suggest...

Any help would be great

weddings in malta

by kungfupugface

my partner and i are getting married at the valletta registry on the 12th august. although our children wont be with us for the full 2 weeks, can anyone suggest outings for the family??
also would like recommendations for quiet romantic meals and places suitable for long romantic walks etc.

You could go to Mdina. A small walled town.

Visit the Parisio Palace in Naxxar. This palace has two beautiful gardens. The right location for your wedding pictures.

Have a nice wedding and...party!!!

Hmmm ... Romantic quiet walks may be difficult at this time of the year as there are plenty of tourists around almost everywhere!

What I would suggest is Selmun (northern part of Malta) ... have a nice romantic walk just before sunset amongst the Maltese countryside and then admire the sunset over the sea. Then there is a fabulous restaurant inside an authentic Maltese tower - should be both romantic and quite unique!

Hope this helps!

Hi...

Getting married in Malta? You've just found the perfect Island in love with culture, history & its people....

Whilst congratulating you and wishing you all the best, I recommend the most romantic dining experience in the most romantic fortified city in Malta.

Check out my accommodation tip on my MDINA page.... The Xara Palace is definetely the most appropriate romantic wedding dining experience.

best wishes from Malta
