by AdHocTravel The American Hotel (formal name now Crowne Plaza Amsterdam- American)
Very nice rooms, a bit pricey but great location. Would stay there again in a minute. Don't tell the cab driver you want to go to the Crowne Plaza (there is one by Centraal Station) tell them to go to 'The American Hotel' that is the name it is known by in town. This is a huge hostel. WOW, is it big. And it is part of a gym, so you feel like you are living in a locker room. But that is okay, because you are spending so little money to stay there, that it doesn't matter how odd the place is. It is around 3 miles from the Train Station, and getting to it can be a pain. Take the bus from the station, if you would like, but the taxis aren't expensive, and you know what? The drivers are cute! ;) The rooms are dorms, and there is no atmosphere. However, the rooms are clean, the bathrooms immaculate and the food good. And that is what matters! As a bonus, if you like to swim (like I do), then this is your place. The swimming pool is indoor and FREE to all hostellers! Above is a picture of old Maastricht, viewed from across the Maas River (the side the train station is on). The hostel is about 2.5 miles from old Maastricht. Of note--the hostel is only a couple of hundred yards from the border with Belgium!! This hostel was in a very nice location, near a big park and close to good shopping, resturants and nightlife (Vondelpark is the park, and the Leidseplein is the area). The best thing about this hostel is the fact that it takes reservations by e-mail. The folks here are very concientious and make good efforts to make sure your stay is comfortable and your time in Amsterdam is spent doing things, not checking into your hostel. The rooms are clean, the bathrooms clean, and the breakfast filling and good. The atmosphere is a little sterile, but I would rather have that than dirt and scum everywhere! I definitely recommend staying here. To the left is a picture of the view we had from our room...quite nice, I think!
