Holidays for the whole family !!
A few KMs from Assen you can find the hoilidaycentre Zilverberkpark "Witterzomer''.
It's a wonderful place for camping in a large green natural setting. You can bring your own tent or caravan, but you can also hire a bungalows, a furnished tents or a wooden hut.
There is a restaurant, a snackbar, breakfastservice, shoppingservice and much more.
Unique Quality: ''Witterzomer'' has its own swimmingpool, playinggrounds for kids, parcours for ponies, midgetgolf, jeu de boules, crossparcours for bikes and grounds for tennis, football, basketball and volleyball. Every summer week has its own theme with a lot of activities for young and old. And if you like to do something else, at the reception they can you give a lot of tips to enjoy the nature and culture of Drenthe.
My parents started this hoilidaycentre in 1952 and I lived here for 20 years. At that time I always prefered to stay home to see my holidays-friends, to share all the nice activities, to camp myself with my friends or to work here during holidays.
Directions: 5 KM west of Assen at 1 KM from the village Witten.
Instead of saying what's here, I'd be faster by saying what's not here. You can camp here with your tent/camper/caravan or rent a hut, holiday home, group home, tent or even a hotelchalet. The fields for camping are huge and the facilities are great, the campground is 3 kilometers from Assen.
Unique Quality: There we go: swimming pool, small lake, playgrounds, midgetgolf, tennis courts, football/basketball/volleyball courts, bicycle rent, restaurant, supermarket and laundry.

hello i am from greece and i need your help!!!i will be in amsterdam at 13 of september at 11:30 in the morning.i want to go to assen the same day for the tattoo convention.can i make it or is it too far?how can i be there in time?
Re: assen help!!!
Is that 11.30 arrival at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport?
The first direct train from the airport to Assen ai the one departing at 12.19 and arriving at 14.34 at Assen station. You have to take stadsbus 4 for a 12 minutes busride to the "De Smelt" building.
The convention will be open till 19.00; so you have some 4 hours maximum to attend the convention.
Next direct train connection is one hour later.
On the half hours in between, you have to change trains at the Amersfoort station.
Re: assen help!!!
You can plan your journey with public transport here:
Re: assen help!!!
The Netherlands are very small, so Amsterdam-Assen takes just two hours and maybe an extra 15 minutes. You have to take the train to Leeuwarden or Enschede if you're from the central Station and change in Amerfoort.
If you're from the airport Schiphol, you can take the train to Groningen, once per hour without changes, another time once in Amersfoort again.
So it's possible to get in Assen twice an hour, so don't worry! (changes take normally 3 minutes or so)

Travel Tips for Assen
Assen, city of the palaces
The old part of the citycentre of Assen and the area west of it, concerning the Vaart, Torenlaan and Nassaulaan are declared National Cultural Heritage in 1988.
Assen has 123 national monuments and also many provincial/municipal monuments, concerning all together 350 buildings. Many of these buildings are majestic houses, the so-called palaces of Assen. Some are still inhabited, others are transformed in offices.
You can have a look at the buildings yourself, but you can also arrange a guided walk by the Historical Union of Assen with an explanation about the history and the different styles of the buildings.
For more information: www.ahvassen.nl or www.assen.nl. For some more pictures and descriptions have a look at my travelogue. To refresh my memories of my youth in Assen. And to look with other eyes to all those for me very known buildings, while making pictures for VT.
I always liked this house at the picture (now an office) next to my grammarschool. It is built in chalet-style with neo-gothic details (1873). At a snowy day with very slippery roads, having driving lessons and taking the bend in front of the house, I drove almost in its garden from this side.
Drawbridges near Assen
In the rustic neighbourhood of Assen there are some bridges. Not every bridge is beautiful but nevertheless they can be nice to see.
One of the bridges you can see is for example a drawbridge. These kind of bridges will be lifted up when a pleasure craft is sailing in the water.
Waiting for these bridges isn't boring because it's nice to see te crafts passing by.
Go and enjoy the farms nearby....
Go and enjoy the farms nearby. You can look around at some farmhouses that are open for the public. There even is an old farmvillage nearby that's only there for the public. Very nice to see how everything was in the old days. Also a must see are the old oilpumps here, they have a very special shape. Nice too are the funparcs like Autotron that are very nearby + the zoo in Emmen.
Also many historical things are to see here: there is a special stone age fun & historic parc called 'Archeon' nearby and you can see stoneage graves here called 'hunebedden'.
The thing you absolutely MUST...
The thing you absolutely MUST see in Assen is the museum. I'm kind of a museum freak and I think ours is great. Regularly the museum has different themes where they give loads of information. The moor corpses and the wax face of the girl of Yde is quite interesting to see. I won't tell too much...if you love museums this is nice to check out! The nice thing of Assen is probably that I find the people here more friendly than in other places of the Netherlands. I don't know what makes the people different here from other places. Probably because Assen is still quite 'farmlike' and not yet a big city. It is slowly progressing to a big city though. When I'm away from Assen...the friendly people is what I miss the most...
Being in Emmen is also special...
Being in Emmen is also special for it's many good restaurants. In the next few weeks I will present you a list of my favorit but I will start right of now with the first in a row!
Do not forget to visit Rue the la Gare, a restaurant on the edge of town, you open the door and you enter the 40-ties by it's overwelming decoration and lightning! Emmen is nice to live or to stay for a few days, do not forget to park your car outside the center along the 'Kerkhoflaan' because it's free to stay there all day. If you are late and wanna go for a bite, try Massada, a friendly place serving pizza and roasts until 4 am on regular days and on special occasions you can go there around the clock!
Remember the Timebandits? They are from Emmen!!!
