I have an opportunity to visit Noordwijk, but I know nothing about it. Has anybody been there and what can you tell me? Is there much to do and see there? Can I get around by myself, only speaking English?
Have a look of the welth of information on:
Almost everybody will speak English there (and German and some French probably!)
You can do a nice long walk through the dunes, great nature, you might see a deer if you start early or the morning or late in the afternoon...
For instance this one, that starts at Stayokay hotel at de Langevelderlaan 45 and is marked with pictures of lizards according to the website...
I know Noordwijk well, as I lived in the neighbourhood (Leiden) and my brother lived there. I still visit every so often for sentimental reasons.
Noordwijk-aan-Zee is a seaside village, best known for its boulevard along the sea, which typically, can be very lively during summer but rather bland when the weather is bad or in winter. Not much in the way of architecture or culture.
Nearby Noordwijk-Binnen has a very small but attractive old village center.
English should be no problem.
If you like cycling, walking, and beach, then it could be a good base for a holiday. But for culture and nightlife, you're better off in the nearby city of Leiden.
Noordwijk has, in my opinion two further attractions:
- the best bakery (cakes) in the country: Huize van Wely
- Space Expo, http://www.space-expo.nl/gen_content.asp?PageID=53
