Canals
by 36waterfalls
Historic houses line the canals of Harlingen. If you're into architecture you'll find quite some treasures here. A wonderful neighbourhood with the quiet water keeping the peace. Enjoy Harlingen's charm for example near Zoutsloot, once home to the companies that refined salt that was used for salting fish and veg.
Havenmantsje
by 36waterfalls
Designed in 1884 by architect Metzelaar to serve as a district-court, this building lost its function in 1934 to become a station for the water-police.
The water-police left it in August 2007 and the city of Harlingen is still in talks about the building's future.
Untill then it remains a listed building on the foot of the Waddenpromenade.
Not open to the public.
Elfstedentocht 1996 (or 1997)
by Mique
The only time i was ever in Harlingen as far as i can remember was for the Elfstedentocht in 1996 (or 1997). I don't remember the year but it has to be one of those since those years where the only years there was an elfstedentocht since 1986. And i would have been much younger then ;-)
For those of you who don't know what the Elfstedentocht is.. It is a 200 kilometer tour through 11 cities in Friesland hence the name Elfstedentocht (11-cities tour). It starts and ends in Leeuwarden. And since the official first organised tour in 1909 it has been held only 15 times! But when the ice is thick enough and the ice-master declares that the ice is ok, the whole of the Netherlands stops turning! It is THE event. Every office, school, institution has TV's everywhere so people can follow the event. And the people who can, go up to Friesland to be there and support the skaters (and party of course).
But when the tour is held, it is usually very very cold... This year it wasn't too bad (though still very cold). But it is recorded that with some tours it was soo cold people lost toes and such...
