Travel Tips for Leeuwarden
Elfsteden Tocht
Leeuwarden is the start and finish town of the Friese Elfstedentocht. This is a 200 km skating event along the eleven Frisian towns organised when the winter is cold enough and the ice is thick enough.
Packing List
Take a waterproof backpack with you. Bring along some light clothes in summer, but always bring a pair of trousers, a coat, raincoat, a sweater and some good walking shoes too. It can rain in summer. In winter it's very cold here, that's why in winter lots of people bring their ice skates a long. When the winter is very cold and the ice is strong everywhere there even is a national Ice Skate Distance Match held. It's called the 'Elf Steden Tocht'. The ride goes through eleven cities / villages in the province of Friesland. Good film is available here. Bring a waterproof tent when you go camping. Don't forget a sleepingbag too.
St. Bonifatius
The neo-Gothic St. Bonifatius was built in 1882-1884. Although catholics in Leeuwarden formed a minority, their number was large enough to justify the construction of a second church, the first being the St. Dominicus. P.J.H. Cuypers designed the new church, which is considered to be one of his best.
Police department
Although you don't want to go inside, the outide of the building is beautiful! It is in the same style as the Stadhouderlijk Hof and I think the buildings were constructed around the same. They maybe even had the same owner!
