by martin_nl

The main square of Leeuwarden is Zaailand. It is not a beautiful sqaure but it is right in the centre of the city. On the sqaure you can find a shopping mall, and on the sides of the square are many shops. Many buses stop here and it's only a few minutes walk from the Central Station. Every Saturday there is a market, where you can a lot of fresh dutch food. Throughout the year there are quite some events. One of them is a big party for students.

The Jacobijnerkerk, also known as Grote Kerk ('great church') was built in the 13th century as the church of the Dominican monastery. In the 15th century the church was extended. After the Reformation the monastery was closed and the church became a protestant one. The choir became a mausoleum for the Frisian branch of the (Oranje-)Nassau family.
