Tour guide for Sneek

by dmelnyk

Hi folks:

I am planning a trip with some friends to cruise the Canals of Friesland and wanted to know if anyone has had experience with any tour guides for Sneek? Are there any good markets (i.e. market days?) Which are the best restaurants / bars etc. in Sneek. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards, Dave Melnyk, Toronto, Canada

First of all: when are you travelling? You'll find loads of info on the official tourist office website: http://www.vvvsneek.nl/ (there is an English link).
The famous Sneek Week is 2-7 August 2008.
For 2007, have a look at:
http://www.holland.com/global/index.html?page=http://www.holland.com/global/events/sneekweek.html

Sneek has a small street market on Tuesdays (9-13 hrs) and Saturdays (9-17 hrs).

Restaurants in order of quality:
http://www.iens.nl/zoekEenRestaurant/index.htms?f=0&o=f&searchType=extended&area=Sneek&price_operator=%3C%3D&group=3

You'll have a great time in Friesland. Enjoy!

Maybe you'll already aware that Friesland is bilingual. Sneek is known as Snits. It might be fun to learn a bit of Frisian (Fries), which is in fact a bit related to English.
Sneek is not a big town, you'll easily find your way around. It's very popular as a tourist town.

The Sneek Maritime museum offers a number of guided tours, to be booked by the local tourist office (see ATLC's reply).

The page is in Dutch only, but will give you an impression:

Travel Tips for Sneek

Sailing and boating

by ATLC

The province Friesland is most renowned for its sailing and boating opportunities. Many people who live here own a boat. Some are lucky to have their boat moored right where they live. This possibility greatly adds to the value of the house.

Talk with the locals

by ATLC

Frisian people speak Frisian. That is not a dialect but a different language. It is a bit between Dutch and English. Luckily Frisians are bilingual and speak Dutch also. So there's nothing from keeping you to talk to some people!

"Hometown Sneek"

One of the things Sneek is famous for is the Sneekweek, this is a yearly event with a boat race ending at the Snekermeer and also lots of things to do in the city. The welknown building in Sneek is the Waterpoort. You see this building on stickers on cars from people from Sneek and on the flag.
