I have three kids, the eldest has just turned four, the second is two and a half, and there is a four months old baby. Where can I find family (and purse)friendly accomodation? What sites to see, things to do? Places to avoid? Thanks for your help.
Renting a summer cottage near the beach would be ideal (North of Midsland).
Exploring the island per bicycle is a must.
Otherwise is sun, beach & water and small kids are very happy with that (see my very first holiday picture at my homepage).
Consider a ride with the horse drawn carriage (huifkar) to the wild East of the island (Boschplaat).
There is forest too; I cannot imagine your kids will be bored.

ik zie dat ik verzuimd heb te reageren op je advies betreffende Terschelling vorig jaar. We zijn uiteindelijk terechtgekomen in Noordwolde, Friesland. We waren daar in de koudste en natste week van mei. Komende maand proberen we het er weer, we zijn nu gebonden aan de schoolvakanties. Kijken hoe dat bevalt.

The best thing about Terschelling are the beaches! Normally I don't like the beaches in the Netherlands, because they are small and very crowed. But fortunally the beaches of Terschelling are completly opposite from that! They are wide and lonely!
A backpack and a bicycle luggage bag. A nice map holder for the bike is very helpful as well. As little as possible since you have to carry it around all the time. And there are laundry facilities on camp grounds. The containers should be as small as possible since, again, you gotta fit everything on your bike! Do take your camera!! Lots to take pictures of. However, sometimes it gets annoying to get of your bike again and again to shoot those nice views. Small tent, sleeping mat, sleeping bag, your own clothes put in the overbag of your sleeping bag can serve as a pillow. A small coocker gear is nice as well to make tea or an energy giving oat porridge. :)
This is the Noord Zee Strand on Terschelling late in April close to Midsland aan zee. The sunshine, sand, sea and absence of people has a high level of appeal for a quiet time.
In terms of cleanliness, this is a very pristine strand. For the wildlife enthusiast shy, grey seals can be spotted enjoying the isolation around the island.
This is an early morning view of De Brandaris across the marina from the coastal path.
On the beach you will find numbered locators like this. On a beach in excess of 25km long these prove useful for keeping track of how far you have walked and how far your journey back will be! This is post 10,800 close to Midsland aan zee.
Note how crowded the beach is! If you prefer more company go somewhere else.

Terschelling is a small wadden island for the coast of Friesland in the waddenzee.
You can reach Terschelling by ferry from rederij Doeksen.
The ferry depart from the city of Harlingen and goes to West Terschelling.
It is 2 hours with the normal Ferry and 1 hour by the fast ferry the Koegelwiek.
Terschelling is a nice destenation for walking, bicycling, sunbathing in the summer, windsurfing on water and beach.
And for long and short trips.
It is a lovely island with beautifull white sandy beaches. There are not so many cars
I been often in Terschelling mostly for long weekends for 4 days.
In oktober there is the marathon of Terschelling "de berenloop".
