What is the easiest way to Apeldoorn from the UK?
by Rincelex
I have to organise a trip to Apeldoorn from the UK and I need some help.
What is the nearest airport?
Can anyone recommend a hotel preferably 3* or above?
Does anyone know what the transfer time is between the nearest airport and Apeldoorn by car and by train?
Thanks in advance.

The nearest airport will be 'Schiphol'.
There is a train connection from Schiphol (platforms just beneath the arrival hall) to Apeldoorn. This train ride takes about 75 minutes.
There are other airports (Eindhoven and Weeze in Germany) used by low cost carriers, but it is not as easy to reach Apeldoorn by train.
For Apeldoorn hotels/pensions and b&b's see:

I'm not sure where you are looking for, but the best (and most expensive) hotels in Apeldoorn are:
De Keizerskroon
Best Western Het Loo
Hampshire Hotel Apeldoorn
Hotel et Café de Paris (in the city centre)
Hotel Abbekerk, smaller and with more atmosphere
Hope you will enjoy my hometown

Hi,
To check the public transport yourself use http://www.ns.nl for the trains or http://www.9292ov.nl/ for all public transport. ATLC translated the last site: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tp/1aa687/.
For the distances by car you can use any route planner such as http://www.anwb.nl

Money
by vtveen
Everybody needs (some) money during a stay in Apeldoorn. You will find a lot of bank offices, spread over the town and in the city centre. They all do have ATM's.
For instance the Rabobank, located at the Marktplein just opposite the new town hall, has three ATM's (inside and outside) and inside the entrance hall also a currency exchange machine. I recommend to use your bank card, otherwise you have to pay a fee withdrawing euro's.
visit TIC or VVV first..

Then after that you are able to find your personal favourite spots.

The hospital
by a5floor
Hopefully you won't need it during your stay in Apeldoorn. But the hospital is named 'Gelre Ziekenhuis' and the location is 'Lukas'. A few years ago, the hospital started to make it 'modern': 2 locations going to one, a rehabilitation centre and psyciatry ward will be added. They are still busy in doing that. But it is getting closer to the final stages.
Phallic Symbols - A Question For The Locals

Here's a sculpture with no obvious accreditation or explanation that I noticed on my wanders of the suburbs. There's also a similar sculpture in Nijmegen (see pic #2).
Is it a Gelderlander thing?
And the solution came almost immediately and simultaneously from ATLC and vtveen as soon as I posted it on the travel forum.
To quote the latter:
"For Apeldoorn, my hometown, it is one of five public art objects by an artist called Peter van der Locht. These five objects are called: Vijf Zuilen (Five Pillars) and are standing on different places in town.
On Wikipedia I did read he also made two of these objects in Nijmegen (Twee Zuilen). "
And here's a link to the whole set:

Amazing how educational VT can be!
