Houseboat Gaudi ann de Rijn: Suited Me Perfectly

On this trip my overnight criteria were quite simple: close to the railway station and city centre, reasonable price and free WiFi.

Houseboat Gaudi aan de Rijn fulfilled these perfectly with a fistful of bonuses thrown in.

The houseboat itself is visually striking, being inspired by the work of the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi and in particular his later creations such as the Casa Batlló in Barcelona. Externally the owners have followed Gaudi's style of introducing curvature to the underlying rectangular structure, as if to bring life to the inorganic.

Inside, the organic theme continues with the use of natural materials and very individual furnishings and decoration giving the open kitchen, dining and living space a comfortable homely feel at the same time as being classy and arty.

Being on the river adds tranquillity yet the city centre is less than ten minutes walk away.

There are only two letting rooms, both overlooking the river, and these are simply, but comfortably furnished and with a work-desk should you need it. Once again these are characterfully-decorated, with, I think, some of the owner's own artworks on the walls. The shared facilities are spotless with a range of natural soaps and toiletries, should you require them, and you do get your own towels.

Also appreciated, even though I didn't use it, is the "honesty bar" where you are free to help yourself to hot and cold beverages including beer and wine - you just write down what you've had and settle up on departure.

The best part of my stay tho' was the lady half of the owners, Sil van Oort, who as well as being rather gorgeous was a superb hostess and an interesting person in her own right. Breakfast, around the communal table, was a delight with home-baked breads, organic honey and preserves, a good selection of tasty meats and cheeses, copious quantities of freshly-made coffee and to top-things-off very convivial company.

So if you are looking for somewhere a little different, without it costing you a fortune, check out the website below:

Bed and Breakfast Jansbeek: Delightfully friendly B&B close to Sonsbeek Park

A short walk from Arnhem Central Station, Jansbeek is down a residential street very close to the lovely Sonsbeek Park (unbelievably for Holland, we actually climbed a bit of a hill to get there). Upon arriving, we were welcomed in and taken up to our room on the top floor of the family house. There are only two rooms, but both, as the landlady was keen to show us the other one while it was empty, were pristinely kept and very comfortable. Our room, the Natural Room, looked over the rooftops of Arnhem's characteristic residential area. The room came with a widescreen television complete with a choice of DVDs, a fridge and complimentary tea, coffee and cake. The breakfast was brought up on trays and was extraordinarily good value. The proprietors were full of helpful suggestions, though we had already planned our day. Jansbeek was an excellent base for exploring the area (Kroller-Muller, Oosterbeek, Kasteel Doorwerth) and is located in a quiet, safe area away from the bustle of the newly- renovated city centre. There is a small bar opposite, a very good restaurant around the corner and the streets feel exactly as they would have been before the devastating events of September 1944.

Friendliness was unrivalled and comfort and convenience of location astounding.

Golden Tulip Arnhem-Velp: A bit too far from the centre

I stayed here for just on night. The price was pretty good at £67 for the twin room.

There were a few problems with the hotel in so far as it was a bit far from the city centre and therefore even though we caught a bus in, the cab fare on the way back was a bit pricey at 18 Euros.

Also there was no hot water in the morning, which meant for a cold shower.

We didn't have the breakfast as we had decided to get it later on our tour of the city centre and the John Frost Bridge.

Compaen Botel: Stay on a nice boat!

We found this boat on a bed and breakast site. The boat is huge and gorgeous. The room for 2 was big enough, comfortable. Shower is a nozzle over the sink, small bathrooms on boats always.

The double room with bunk beds is super compact, we saw that one too. It's cozy.

65 euro a night, 45 for a single (the bunk bed room I assume).

A lovely breakast was included, breads, coffee or tea, cheeses/meats/pate, fruit juice, maybe fruit, jam, chocolate sprinkles, butter, a hard cooked egg. Elly Doornbosch en Felix Reijmers
are the owners and really friendly. There's just a few rooms.

It's only a 6-10 min. walk to the train station and very close to restaurants and bars, about 5-8 mins.

Bed & breakfast: Bed & breakfast

I stayed in private bed & breakfast outside the centre. It was nice and cheap. But the reason was that it was near the place I neded to take my bus to the airport. I have to look at my papers for the address and telephone, later...

Camping Warnsborn: Cosy small camping in the forest

It's small and therefor quite personal. It has great standard camping facilities and still is only a ten minutes drive from the centre of Arnhem. What does one want more? Camping Warnsborn is really a beautiful place to stay for families, couples, singles everybody who wants to enjoy stay in the open.

Location within one of the most beautiful estates in Arnhem (Schaarsbergen).

Cosy stays in a friendly environment: From ordinary beds til sleepingplace aboard a ship

In my opinion Bed & Breakfasts are always the nicest ways in staying somewhere and getting in contact with locals in a friendly and almost familiar environment. Therefor I would like to offer all visitors to Arnhem the next link to choose from a nice selection:

http://www.bedandbreakfast.nl/English/p4pd.asp?ct=Arnhem&pr=Gelderland

Here you can find some very nice stays in green area's, in the centre and even a couple that offer a sleepingplace on a boat on the river Rhine! Just take your pick.
