Use the Dutch Public Transportation journey planner:
http://journeyplanner.9292.nl/
or the one of the Dutch Railways website: http://www.ns.nl/cs/Satellite/travellers
Be aware of the fact that the Arnhem train station is going through a major renovation of the train tracks and might be closed till August 22. Train transportation will be taken over by busses, causing a travel time delay of about 30 minutes.

The Parachute drop of '' Market Garden ''
by Waalewiener
The Battle of Arnhem ,also code named.
Operation Market Garden .
In September 1944 ,British ,Polish and American airborne forces were dropped near the village '' Wolfheze ''a ways from Arnhem .
Several droppping zones were used .
The operation was designed to capture the bridges over the rivers from Arnhem to Belgium. It did not work out the way it was planned .As you will read in the following tips the operation went sour because of the strong resistance of the German troups that were around the area. The Bridge over the Rhine was '' One Bridge too Far ''.
This is one of the Memorials in Groenewoud Park.

Lt Col Frost was in command of 2 Battalion The Parachute Regiment which dropped 6 miles west of Arnhem on Sunday 17th September 1944. The task of this battalion was to seize the main bridge over the Rhine at Arnhem and to hold this bridge until the arrival of 30 Corps.
A bridge too far ...
by Pavlik_NL
Biggest impact on Arnhem in history was no doubt the last half year of the second worldwar. In September 1944 the allied forces tried to get the boys back home before Christmas through a bold airborne attack to capture and take the bridges over the large rivers in The Netherlands and so enter Germany directly into it's heart: the Ruhr-area (industry). All bridges were taken (except the Son-bridge that took care of delay). Only Arnhem bridge couldn't be held long enough and a dreadful massacre followed as the British soldiers did not want to give up. All can be reviewed in the museums in and around Arnhem (most comlpete is the Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek, see separate page). In the churchtower there is a short explanation, while looking onto the bridge down below. That "one bridge too far". Too many, too various ... let's just call it "home".
Heavy Fighting near the Bridge .

In 1976, Frost was invited onto the set of the Richard Attenborough film, "A Bridge Too Far", where he acted as a military consultant during the scenes concerning Arnhem Bridge. In 1977, the reconstructed Arnhem Road Bridge was christened the John Frostburg in honor of those who battled furiously to defend it, though he had originally been hesitant about accepting this offer, but was prevailed upon by Freddie Gough. In 1980, he published a well received novel about his wartime military career, A Drop Too Many.

On the second of June we were honoured by the visit of Kay (VT-membername: Haldane) and her daughter Keziah. They were travelling in the East of The Netherlands and we agreed in a mini-meeting and tour in / around Arnhem. Of course we went up the tower to ring the bell and though the weather was somewhat windy and rainy, we had a great day together. We saw Arnhem's centre as well as the castle of Doorwerth (including a tour inside) and took a short walk on the estate of Mariƫndaal. We had some lovely talks and hope that we will meet again. Kay, Keziah ... it was great !!! Thanks for coming over.
