Trains, trains, trains and ... steamlocomotives
"A small green village hides a secret"
Beekbergen, definately not one of the main tourist hotspots within the Netherlands. Silently this small village in the green forests of the "Veluwe"-hills in the province of Gelderland. Just South of Apeldoorn and not many will have heard about it, even when being Dutch. Still, this village holds a very special, even industrial treasure. A secret that I will reveal in these pages after we had a splendid day out with our family, in which Ilja finally met his beloved ... "trein"
"Ilja: "Trein aan" ... "Train on" (TV)"
For months we have heared it. In november 2003, Ilja got from his grand-daddy a model locomotive and a video. At first Irina and me thought: "well, that's not a present for his age", but we were so wrong. After watching the video a tradition started of which there seemed no ending. Every morning with breakfast, Ilja asked "trein aan", which mend as much as "put the video of the trains in and let's watch". The video contained a documentary about a type of steamlocomotives (the Pacific) and Ilja was completely addicted to it.
"... and so we went to "Beekbergen"."
well, with such enthousiasm about the old trains, papa had to find a way to show his son the real thing. I had heared about the "Veluwsche Stoom Maatschappij" (Veluwe Steam Society) and looked up what we could do. After some research we decided to surprise Ilja at Easter 2004 and went to the "station" of Beekbergen. This village is the home of a truely magnificent collection of steam-trains and other railroad antiquities. Not only Ilja was amazed ... we all had a wonderful day out.
