Hotel Recommendation Please

by RoscoeGregg

I am heading to Nijmegen for a few days in October. Does anyone have a recomendation for a nice local hotel, hostel or B&B?

I wish I were rich but I am not. So I am willing to accept a little local color so to speak.

Thank You In Advance For Your Time,

Randy

Not cheap but excellent value for money is the Hotel Courage down by the river. I loved this hotel. Here's my write-up: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/9d51c/70026/3/

The second link at the bottom is for the local hotel info which will give you some other options.

Travel Tips for Nijmegen

Mermaid on the Waal?

by fraise13

No, its a woman on a wall, not a mermaid on a waal, silly!

The river Waal is mysteriously deceptive, with wonderful albeit random pieces of art and decorum along amidst the factory industry of the other sections. Nijmegen is the best place to see some of this. Sit at one of the cafes along the river, or even eat aboard one of the boats there! I loved it when the wind stopped blowing long enough to appreciate the sun's warmth and see things like this.

Also the centre of Nijmegen is a visit worth. Nice old houses.
It's a pitty it was already dark when we arrived in Nijmegen.

Take a walk along the riverside, sit on a terrace and watch the ships (and people) go by. Arriving from the north by train, bus, car or bike, you can see my city in full glory. And then I'm proud and can even get sentimental...

Market Garden and the miracle of the bridge

by Pavlik_NL

Nijmegen had in recent history witness of a little miracle in the Market-Garden-operation (WW-II), although it eventually didn't help the English fighting at Arnhem-bridge. As the allied forces fight their way towards the Waal-bridge, the Germans were ready to blow it skyhigh. A detachment of Americans crossed the river with high losses and approached the bridge from the North. First tanks entered it from the South as the SS-officer gave the order to detonate the explosives under the bridge. Nothing happened!!! Until the day of today no-one knows exactly who cut the wires - as later one found out. It is said to be a Nijmegen student and resistance-member, but he couldn't tell. He got shot at the end of the same day in the streets of the town.

Getting Married in The Netherlands

by johngayton

Only civil marriages have legal status in the Netherlands and these are usually performed in the town or city hall. After the civil ceremony can the wedding be solemnized in a church ceremony.

The 16th century city hall here in Nijmegen is on the main Burchtstraat, which is the street heading west from the Grote Markt.
