public transport from Apeldoorn to Nijmegen

by BrigitteFunk

Hi dear local expert,

Could you please give me information about public transport
from Apeldoorn Train Station to Nijmegen Train Station.
I´m arriving on THUR 19 August between 17:00 and 18:45 and would like to get to Nijmegen as fast as possible.
Thank you so much for your help :-)
Hope to hear from you soon

Brigitte

OK, I'll explain!

Use http://journeyplanner.9292.nl/ for all Dutch public transportation
or
http://www.ns.nl/cs/Satellite/travellers for just train schedules
(both links are in English).

TRAIN:
The train trip takes 1 hour 23 minutes and (unfortunately) 3 changes:
Apeldoorn-Zutphen, Zutphen-Arnhem, Arnhem-Nijmegen.
There are also possible delays on this route because of maintenance along the route.
Best to take the trains that are 4 or 34 minutes after the hour.
The one-way trip costs 10.50 euro.

BUS (recommended):
Use the first link above for this.
First, buy a 'strippenkaart' at Apeldoorn train/bus station. A 15-strip will be enough and costs 7.60 euro.
The bus ride takes 1 hour 25 minutes and involves 2 changeovers:
From Apeldoorn busstation (at the train station) take bus 123s to Arnhem. Have the bus driver stamp off 9 strips off your strippenkaart.
At Arnhem Central station take Citybus, 10 destination Schuytgraaf. Get off at busstop 'Station Arnhem Zuid'.
Walk to platform 2 and take Fasttrain, destination Nijmegen. Get off at trainstation 'treinstation Nijmegen' (arrival platform 4a).
The train bit costs 2.50 euro and the bus bit costs 9 strips (4.56), total 7.06 euro.

There are schedules with less changeovers but they take 20-30 minutes longer. That's why I chose the ones above.
There are various trains and buses per hour, so you don't need to worry about that.

Good luck!

As ATLC pointed out, the bus option probably is better.

Till August 22 the Dutch Railways is finalizing a major reconstruction of the tracks at the Arnhem station (in between) and in stead of trains there's a bus services, with at least half a hour delay compared to the normal train service.

You are saying "I'm arriving on THUR 19 August ...."
Just curious where are you coming from; there might be another option of travelling to Nijmegen ??

Yes, I thought maybe there would but the OP will be in Apeldoorn for a reason, no?
Car is no option. The normal travel time by car is 50 minutes but given the time of day, that could (and probably will) be easily twice as much. Thus, no faster than public transportation!

22 Februari 1944, a black day in Nijmegen history

by Pavlik_NL

On the 22th of February 1944 Nijmegen was struck with a very fierce bombardment by the allied forces. Being close to the German border and due to a miscalculation within the command centre of the bombing fleed, Nijmegen was seen as a German industrial town and became a target. Of the city centres monument only few came out unharmed. Most of them were detroyed are badly damaged.

Take a look near the Waalbrug to see the river Waal.

The Waalkade is a boulevard along the river, with lots of opportunities to eat and go out.

At the Waalkade is also the casino and two museums, namely De Stratemakerstoren and Velorama.

If you go up the stairs next to the casino. You can take a walk into the Valkhofpark. Once the Valkhof was a mighty castle of as they call him often 'Charle Magne' . Unfortunately there are only ruïns now.

A beautiful site on the Waalkade is: www.waalkadenijmegen.nl

Restaurants, Bars and other tips are mentioned. There is one problem the site is in dutch. Going out and have a nice meal in one of the attractive restaurants.

Try Pomme Fritje, the national food

by Martin_S.

You can see the gentleman in the photo preparing our Pomme Fritje...this should be the national food if it is not and maybe even on the flag, we found it EVERYWHERE, just like those golden arches in the USofA.
It is prepared by making like French Fries (or Freedom Fries), after the potatoes are cut, you then place them in boiling oil, partially cook them, then remove them and let drain...when you want to have a plate, you just put them back in the boiling oil and cook till done. They are eaten with mayonnaise and other sauces. You will see it as a fast food, being eaten on the streets from a paper cone and we saw many a person with a touch of mayonnaise on their nose or fingers...(yes, including US ;O))
