Some of the former military quarters are transformed to hotel bedrooms. You can either stay at the soldiers quarters, the captain's house or the special bridal suite.
Hotel Bourtange is located just outside the fortress and on average has older guest looking for a quiet nice place to stay. It's a hotel/pension with 12 rooms.
Heres a shot of the room ,before we messed it up ...not pictured is the roomy full bath and the nice view looking out on residents gardens and the earthen walls ...as you can see furnishing is tastefully done and the Kamer is roomy with chairs ,table and even a TV...
The old Soldiers Barracks have been restored ...though I doubt many of them lived like this . For 65 Euro a night one gets a great room , with full bath + a quality breakfast+ free admission to the five museums+ the chance to experience the tranquility of this town in the quiet evenings/ mornings ...also provided are maps and nice information packets upon checkin at the Information centre ,just outside the town ...Cars can be driven over the quaint bridges into the town, and parking is not a problem....We booked the Hotel from their website ,and recieved info packets by mail, and friendly service and help from the people in charge when we arrived ...highly recommended.
...de Vrouw dresses in 1700s style whilst serving breakfast ,in a room decorated with old maps , and scenes from bygone days ....As PavlikNL says in his excellent Bourtange page : If this place was closer to the cities it would be always full...thank goodness for location ,as much of its charm would be lost...
Twelve comfortable rooms in what used to be soldiers barracks and the coach house within the fortress of Bourtange.
Location and way of staying are unique in itself. Prices are very reasonable and include a breakfast in - what used to be - the soldiers mess hall.
