housing

by orely.j

Hello,

As a French student, I'm going to spend one semester in Groningen, in the faculty of Arts. I'm searching a place to live : appartment, flatmate... Or maybe a family or a single person who has a room to rent... I could give some help in the house !
If you know anybody who would have a place for me, tell me ! I'm coming from +/- the 30th August and stay untill the beginning of February.
Thanks a lot,

Aurélie

this year will most likely be harder than last year in regards to finding accom as they continue to increase the number of students allowed to study here. the best advice is to get here at least a week before university starts and stay in a hostel (the cheapest is the Simplon). if you were like me, and the 20 other students at the Simplon last year, you will have more luck when you can arrive and speak face to face with potential room owners. try justlanded.com, and in the university Harmony building near the ground floor bathrooms, there is a notice board with rooms available and where you can post an add. most dutch people use kamernet.nl, and facebook also, but again, its unlikely you will have luck without meeting the advertiser.

Travel Tips for Groningen

True Student Town

by AnnewithanE

You can get good food at generally cheap prices. Look for sandwich shops and follow the students for good, local dishes. The students know where to go. I love the Frites Met (fries with Mayo) in Groningen. Of course, you can get these with ketchup or even Sate, but why not try the local version. There are great places to get these. My favorite place for a quick snack after going to Discos with friend was a busy place off the of the main square close to the "Dree Zusters" (the biggest bar in Europe with lots of hidden rooms and passageways). Similar to a large vending machine, you can put change into a slot and open a small glass door to get the item you have purchased. Or, you can opt for the take-away window for a fresher snack, however, expect to wait. The college students are hungry!

take a stroll through the historic city centre and while you're at it, go up the Martini tower and see the city from above. that would be living there and what I miss most when I'm away is ehhrrr... being there.

Amazing interior

Now look around you, and wow, look up... do you see that ceiling!

I was really amazed by what I saw! This is actually not the station that I remember. When I went to Groningen all these beautiful walls and ceilings were covered up by new white, boring walls. A couple of years ago they decided to restore the station into its old glory and tore away all the new walls and ceiling.... and this is what they discovered underneath it!!! Isn't it beautiful!

I am so glad they decided to restore it like this, it is so beautiful now.... hard to imagine it is a station. But maybe it isn't so hard to imagine... it is like going back in time.... can you imagine people walking here in 1835... I can!

by Umfufu

When you drive from Naaldwijk to Groningen and the other way back, you will have to pass Friesland. This people have their own language. And they call it Freyslan. Even the names of the places are in dubble Dutch...one in Dutch and one in their own language.

Many years ago as a small child I stayed at my aunt's house. She insisted I come with her shopping in Groningen. As a treat that day she took me to the top of the Martini tower. The tower is found in the center of Groningen as most towers are in the old European cities. The tower would be part of the largest church which is usually found in the center of town right along with the market square and city hall. I remember standing on one of the higher levels of the tower and being apprehensive of leaning against the railing. The ends of the railing what appeared to me, were only held on by thin pieces of steel wire inside the concrete, with a large gap between railing and uprights. I don't recall looking much over the railing as I spent most of my time looking at the railing. A more recent climb to the top of the tower revealed a brand-new well built railing.
