Hotel De Ville
Prices 2002: € 110 - € 195. The suite in the picture = € 195 (double occupancy).
Prices 2008: € 129 - € 209. The suite in the picture = € 279
Unique Quality: Very attractive designed hotel in one of the old houses in the center of Groningen. The hotel also has a restaurant ('t Gerecht, see Restaurant tip).
I stayed here in 2002 in a junior suite together with a friend. We both enjoyed the hotel design and excellent service.

Hotels in Madrid
I will be in Madrid late August with a friend who has a slightly different budget than I do...i.e. we need to find a middle ground between my preferences (staying in a youth hostel) and hers' (staying at the Ritz.) I really like the neighborhoods of Chueca and Malasaña but am open to suggestions anywhere in Madrid. Basically I just need a place that is under 100 euros a night for a double, preferably with a bit of character, and preferably somewhere with a youthful (dare I say) trendy edge.

I know this doesn't answer your question, but I felt your struggle for common ground! I went to Madrid with 2 (wealthier-than-I) friends. I would be fine at a little cafe, they wanted restaurants only with cloth table cloths. Plus, they slept until noon. Our compromise, I went off on my own while they were lazy slugs & enjoyed Madrid. Hope you find something great. Madris was a nice city to visit.

The Spanish hotel chain NH offers great value for money. Their hotels are considerably cheaper than their equivalent in the rest of Europe. In Madrid there are several NH hotels in the 3-star and in the 4-star categories. See their website: www.nh-hotels.com
