Sleep in a castle

We booked a room in this old castle the night before the Maastricht VTmeeting august 2005. The building looks great, and the garden is even better. You can walk through the old english countrystyle garden with a booklet availlable at the reception explaining all the trees you see. But the garden isn't that big so if you aren't interested in botany you can also walk for yourself, getting lost is out of the question. But do see the old icecellar in the back of the garden wich is a refuge for bats now. And take a short walk in the woods too.
Once inside the castle go and have a look in the meeting rooms. They are nicely decorated, just as you expect from a castle. This is opposite to the hotelrooms which are just standard rooms you will find in every conference centre you go to. Good beds and a good and clean bathroom, but nothing special. The beds and furniture are modern not in style with the castle. There is a bar and restaurant in the hotel. And free access to the internet on two computers in the hall close to the restaurant.
The breakfast was outstanding. There was everything we could hope for, even fresh strawberries.

Unique Quality: The castle is built in 1739 as a rural estate with agricultural purposes. But during the centuries it is becoming a luxury estate. Which was once owned by King Willem II. In 1954 the estate was bought by the municipality Maastricht. The castle was restored and is now used as a hotel - conference centre. Also on the grounds of the estate is a training company.

Our verdict:
A good hotel, which is nice to be at when the weather is good because of the great garden. You can sit outside having a drink or a snack. Otherwise the hotel is just a bit too far from the centre of Maastricht (5-6 kilometers). And spending the night in your hotelroom or the hotelbar is just not it......
