First time visit

by blijberg09

We are scottish and have been living in Rotterdam for 6 months. We are trying to see more of Holland. Valkenbrug was recommended by work colleagues. We will be traveling from Rotterdam by public transport.

Can you tell us what is the best way to get there !!

Roterdam, via Utrecht to Maastricht. From Maastricht eather train to Heerlen (Valkenburg has a direct rail connection with the Maastricht-Randwyck Station, near the Congress centre (2 trains per hour, 4 and 36 minutes past the hour, respectively,
ride 15 minutes, return fare 3.80 Euro)
Or take local bus from afront the main train station. Recently Veolia changed the numbers of the buses going there, but look for bus going to Bergen ter Blight and Valkenburg..
Chek www.veolia.nl
also www.vvv-maastricht.eu
I think you will love Maastricht as well. I spend 6 yres living there. Has lots to offer and is beautiful.
Apart of Valkenburg I sugest you visit the White village of Thorn, which is close to Roermond and Eindhoven..
Valkenburg Tourist Office
Th Dorrenplein 5
Valkenburg, Limburg 6301 DV
Netherlands

The tourist Office is adjasent to the little canal/river in the hard of the old town, and all is at valking distance.. Visit the Old Castle, take ride with the skilift up to the top of the hill, nice reastorant there and great vistas of the town, than visit the local salt grotos...
Also if you like pampering there is Spa, there Valkenburg Spa2000, great place to relax after had day walking around...
As for Thorn, here are some details here:

Re: First time visit

yes i caught the train from amsterdam to maastricht, my mate was living there.
from maastricht about 15 or so minutes.from the station a few minutes walk to the town centre.
there is a hill in valkenburg probably one of the only ones in holland,
you go up on like a ski lift and come down via a tobogan type slide.
there is a nice little street with cafes etc nice place to chill.

Re: First time visit

Don't know what you want to do/see, but be aware Valkenburg can be VERY touristy and during high season overcrowded.

I would recommend staying in Maastricht and making day trips to the southern part of Limburg by train and/or bus.

Happy travels
Jaap

Travel Tips for Valkenburg

Strawling through the nice little towncentre!

by Roeffie

Valkenburg is a nice little market town with loads of nice terraces and attractions to do all and see all of them you will surely need about 3 days. Only if you are interested in the different venues offered here of course.

Main thing to do here is enjoying a beer on a terrace and watch the other tourists walk by!

Bokkerijders plaque

by Roeffie

This is a plaque to remember a lotof man were killed through torture by Justice, because of the fact they had to be a member of gang committing about 10 burglaries. As far as they know 120 people were killed because of the 10 burglaries. Hooray for justice! This all happened in the 18th century.

A lot of legends evolved around this historical fact. Nowadays the stories are still told by the people. These legends are everything but the truth, but then again who cares the stories are nice.

Thermae 2000 (spa)

by Sprucebeer

Like I said this is the resort area, so what do people with money like to do? The Thermae 2000 is not in Berg en Terblijt, but rather in Valkenburg. This region is so beautiful and peaceful, I’m not sure you need to go to a spa to relax. But if you have extra money to spend, why not pamper yourself. The spa has a wide range of facilities and activities including Turkish and Roman baths. If you really want to splurge you can stay on site at the Themaetel.

Situated on top of the Cauberg hill in south Limburg

French mill (Franse Molen)

by tompt

A ruin, but this once was a proud watermill.
Built in 1804 by the frenchmen Bertrand Loisel. Hench the name French mill.
It was restored in 1861, and got a new wheel in 1876. It was used as a grainmill untill 1962. Today it is a ruin, with fences around it to prevent accidents.
Hopefully someone with money will renovate it and restore it to its old splendour soon, before it is no longer possible to save it.

Toboggan/Bobsled ride

by Pijlmans

Op top of the hill with the Wilhelmina Tower, you can make a ride with a toboggan/bobsled.

You can get on top of the hill using the chairlift (Neerhem 44, http://www.kabelbaan.nl/) or take the stairs next to hotel Atlanta (Neerhem 20, http://www.hotelatlanta.nl/).

NB: The more coins you buy for the toboggan ride, the cheaper they get!
