Travel Tips for Valkenburg

ST. NICOLAAS & BARBARA CHURCH

by LoriPori

Built in 1281 ST. NICOLAAS & BARBARA CHURCH is entirely built of marl, a form of limestone found locally.
You can find it next to De Halder Kasteel.
On the church grounds were very beautiful gardens.

Walking

by Sprucebeer

Yes old fashion walking. If you don’t hope on a bike or a horse, make sure to take a walk on the trails and enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings. A crisp September morning was perfect for such an activity. Hey that's my hubby... wait up for me!! Good shoes... no high heels allowed.

Oud-Valkenburg

by tompt

Not far east of Valkenburg is the village of Oud-Valkenburg. It is a very small village but has some monuments worth seeing.

First there is the Genhoes.

Genhoes means the fortified house, and is probably started as a living tower in the 11th or 12th century. The eldest part is gotic, the bridge is roman and the other buildings are Limburg baroque.
During the 80-year war the castle was destroyed by fire (1577). It was restored in the beginning of the 17th century. The farmhouse part dates from the 18th century. It is now owned by the natureconservation organisation Natuurmonumenten and is NOT open to the public.

Enjoy the scenery

by Sprucebeer

Just relax and enjoy the scenery. There are many outdoor activities to do here, but most of all make sure you relax and take in the natural beauty. It won’t cost you a penny and you will remember it forever. Berg en Terblijt on the River Geul is truly amazing and worth a visit.

Leeuw bier brewery

by tompt

Valkenburg has its own beer brewery. Walk through the Plenkertstraat and you will pass the brewery. Look inside and see this nice copper kettle. Leeuw Bier is brewed since 1886.

The brewery is not open for tours.

But you also enjoy their beer itself ofcourse.
They brew:
Valkenburgs Wit, Pilsener, Oud bruin, voorjaarsbok and najaarsbock.

All beer is brewed with water they get from 105 meters below ground. The water is filtered by the marlstone.

After 120 years of brewing beer in Valkenburg, the brewery closes in 2006. The beers will be brewn in Haacht, Belgium. And the historic building, once a gunpowder factory, will be sold. Wish we had the money to buy it.....
