The Valkenburg municipality is bigger than the town of Valkenburg itself. At short distance from the town is the picturesque village of Oud-Valkenburg, with two castles, a medieval church and several typically Limburg farms. And on the other end you will find Houthem-St. Gerlach, a village with a former convent that once was quite wealthy, witness the former building that is now an expensive hotel and the church, a wonder of Baroque architecture and art. From here it's just a short distance to Berg en Terblijt, where among other things you can find cave-houses as well as a cave-church.
X-mas Markets

Every year for 1 months time in november and december, there are a few Christmas markets in valkenburg. Of course there are X-mas markets in almost every city, but these are special. They are being helt inside the caves. There is one in the municipal cave and one in the velvet cave. Entrance is 3 euros, and there are over 50 stalls with X-mas decorations, food, toys etc etc.

Valkenburg aan de Geul is a touristic hotspot in South Limburg, but also here one can be surprised by little things that still tell their tale. Small specific flowers that make clear that here is a different flora then in other parts of the Netherlands and also small statues in houses, that show historical believes and the peoples cultures based on that. Catholicism is still an important thing in Limburg, but the charming figures over doorways and in corners of houses is a wonderful thing that's easily overlooked. Try to reckognise which saints are in the image and sometimes it might say something about the profession that the person that lives here holds.
A drink in the woods

Tivoli looks like a cottage from a fairytale, a wooden house in the forest. It is at the beginning of the the footpath along the Geul and a place where you can have a drink before you start walking or one to relax after you come back. Ofcourse they do serve food too.

Castle Ruins and Velvet Cave
The Mysterious Medieval double Attraction, as they advertise themselves at their website!
Only ruins remain of the once mighty castle of Valkenburg. Valkenburg once was a fortified town, unfortunately a lot of the fortifications are destroyed during past ages. The castle was built somewhere around 1050. The castle is connected to the Velvet Cave by a labyrinth of corridors. A nice historic touch next to all more fun attractions like the amusementparks.
During the last four weeks before Christmas the Cave is decorated in christmas style and ther is a market.
